Jewish community representatives in Chernigov, Ukraine, offered their support to the new regional Gov. Vladimir Nikolaevitch Khomenko after he told religious leaders attending his April 27 inauguration that he wanted to impart moral and spiritual values to his constituents.

“Let us work together toward the vision of a greater Chernigov,” Khomenko said at the ceremony, which was attended by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Yisroel Silberstein and Jewish community president Semyon Bellman.

Silberstein presented Khomenko, a key force behind the creation of the Chernigov Music Festival, with a silver menorah. In his remarks, he spoke about the responsibility of leaders to help others.

“With a new position comes a new responsibility,” said Silberstein. “What one did yesterday does not suffice for today. We must always advance in spirituality.”
