From Tattoos to Teshuvah

As a young Jew, he inked his Jewish identity onto his skin. Then he deepened his connection to Judaism and adopted a full Jewish lifestyle--including educating others on the prohibition of getting a tattoo.

Skullcaps and Switchblades
Dovid Braslawsce in conversation with Chana Weisberg
Rabbi Dovid Braslawsce, known as The Tattoo Rabbi, grew up as the only Jew in Beaver, PA. A wild kid with few kosher outlets, his life changed after discovering Chabad and MMA in college. Now based in Israel, he serves as Chabad.org’s Happiness Manager by day and leads a men’s self-defense program by night. Dovid travels globally, sharing his story to inspire Jews of all backgrounds.
Chana Weisberg is the editor of TheJewishWoman.org and host of the Ordinary People, Extraordinary Stories podcast. She lectures internationally on issues relating to women, relationships, meaning, self-esteem and the Jewish soul. She is the author of six books. Her latest book, Shabbat Delights, is a two-volume series on the weekly Torah portion.

Chana,
Thank you so much for this podcast. I have one son covered in tattoos and it breaks my heart every time I look at him. I raised all my children that is choose we do not tattoo our bodies. After listening to this podcast, I feel like it’s time for me to let go of my anger and disappointment and focus on the mitzvah that I haven’t completed rather than focusing on the mistakes that my son has made. Thank you to the tattoo rabbi for teaching me this lesson. Reply

Wow, thank you SO much. I'm in my mid 60's, baby boomer, and I have tattoos all over both arms, all over my back, and as a baal teshuvah, this has kind of haunted me for awhile. I don't see them any longer in my minds eyes, and when I look in the mirror at them, I kringe. I appreciate your openness and sharing this. It's helped a lot. I kind of thought since I made teshuvah, that i'd wake up one day and they'd be gone, but they've become my testimony to help others. Reply
