Is there a way to clean up the mess? An (only) adult son has broken off all contact for 3 years. All gifts are considered a controlling attempt using'leverage'. Reply

My heart goes out to you. When one party chooses to break off contact, it makes any repair to the relationship difficult. Do you know what event caused this final break? If so, a note with a heartfelt apology may be in order, along with a blessing from you. Let him know that you respect him as an adult and understand his need to make his own way in the world. It sounds like you have accomplished a lot during your life and you want to make his life easier; his perception is that you are trying to "run" his life and don't see him as grown up enough to do it himself. It will be difficult, but do let him fail, make his own mistakes and then come to you for advice. As long as you've left the lines of communication open, he will - eventually. Reply
