Reb Nochum's vort seems to make sense, this mitzva is lechora one in which you need a partner, it's a two way street. If it's not seder night for your son you are definitely missing something? Could be the father can still fulfill his obligation, it depends on how ve'higadita works, but it would make perfect sense to say that it has to be seder night for your son in-order to be mekyim ve'higadita.
