The Gift Outright You have to know how to read between the lines, as it were, of that superficially non-religious memoirist who reveals that.their own ‘opening’ occurred ‘that summer when I was ten’ or ‘three days before my seventh birthday’, or ‘in the backyard, by the A-Frame, when I was eight’ and all that we universally, and instinctively, knew — that we couldn’t rell anyone — unless we somehow learned to tell it slant.

A childhood Longing for the Divine can be lovely — but the unbidden invitation does not so much present itself as a blessing as .. can I say this, an unlikely life sentence? A chore?

Thqt eight-year-old filed the auggeation as an arrogant, self-aggrandizing fantasy — definitely not to be consciously pursued. But that child would never not be hunted. Reply
