Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Rise of Rome: A biblical history of the Jews

After the Hasmonean victory in the times of Chanukah, there was a period of in-fighting within the Hasmonean dynasty. Much of this conflict broke along ideological lines of Pharisees and Sadducees. Ultimately, this gave rise to the rule of the usurper Herod.

How was the romans descended from Idumeans if the Idumeans were intermarried into the Jewish nation and during the time of Antipater ceased to be a seperate people? That is according to the Jewish encyclopedia. The Edomites that moved into Judea happened years before Antipater even so the intermarrying took place over many years. 2 Kings 16 is when Idumeans/ Edomites move into Judea so I think it is safe to say that there was a lot of intermarrying going on before the time of the Romans between Edom and Jew so it makes no sense that Romans are descended from Edom. The Edomites moved into Judah somewhere between 745-640 BC Reply

in response to Wikus:

Your question requires a careful answer. The family of Esau went at some point to Mt. Hor, mt. Seir. According to Wikipedia, Seir was a horite (hamite) but it also presents the possibility of the Hurrians being the sons of Seir, and Hurrians were already related to Madai and Medes, madai is a son of Japhet thus an European (white skinned we don't know, but persians for sure were white). Romans are descendants of the Greeks who are descendants of Yavan. Who is a a son of Japhet. The sons of Yavan made incursions into ancient Israel at least one time when they mixed with Canaanites and Philistines appeared as a new people in the middle east. Romans, Italian are Edomites that's a given, it's hard to close all the knots to answer your question but certainly you have now some hints. Right now the rabbi here is talking about the Seleucids, thoae greeks of Edom already were mixed with actual Idumeans, maybe that's the answer? Reply

To Terrenza One has to differentiate between the place and the people. The place was the area called Edom in the Chumash. The Talmud tells us however that after the days of Sennacherib we cannot link any nation living in a certain place to the people who lived there is the days of old, since Sennacherib shifted all peoples in his days to different lands.
It also seems from other sources the the Idumeans migrated to another place in the region in the days of the Second Temple and the conversion etc was with other people who came in their place. Reply
