regarding the drinking the foot wash water, does it matter if the mother is mentally competent..what if she was not..would you still honor that? Reply

If the parent is not competent, then the child should avoid being in their presence, so they do not have to refuse to fulfill unreasonable requests. There is even discussion that under some circumstances the child should tansfer the caregiving duties to someone else because of this.
