In a Nutshell Mussar is not an ego trip about the self. Yes, the purpose of Mussar is to improve oneself, to come closer if you will to perfection, to rid oneself of imperfections and vanities, but all of that is for one purpose, that of serving G-d better! The path of a Mussar is difficult to follow because it is not about "what is best for me," but "what is best for G-d!" Reply

In a Nutshell The basic difference between Mussar & Chassidus is that the mussar movement is self-oriented: the "what's best for me", as expressed in reward and punishment and the Chassidus service is centered on what's good for G-d: what brings G-d most nachus. Reply
