Chapter 26

1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, this word came from the Lord, saying:
In the beginning of the reign: This chapter below preceded the above chapter by four years.
2So said the Lord: Stand in the court of the house of the Lord, and you shall speak to all the cities of Judah that come to prostrate themselves in the house of the Lord, all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them; do not omit a word.
3Perhaps they will heed and repent, each one of his evil way, and I will repent of the evil that I think to do to them because of the evil of their deeds.
4And you shall say to them: So said the Lord, If you do not heed Me to walk in My law that I have placed before you,
5To heed the words of My servants, the prophets, whom I send to you betimes, and you did not heed.
6I will make this house like Shiloh and this city I will make into a curse to all the nations of the earth.
7And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.
8And it came to pass when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him, saying, "You shall surely die.
9Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, 'This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant'?" And all the people congregated upon Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.
10And the princes of Judah heard these words and went up from the king's house to the house of the Lord, and they sat at the entrance of the new gate of the Lord.
And the princes of Judah heard: that the false prophets and the priests had seized Jeremiah.
at the entrance of the new gate of the Lord: Others annotated: When Jehoiachin went in exile and some of the vessels of the house of our God went with him, Nebuchadnezzar’s army breached the eastern gate, and Zedekiah subsequently repaired it and renewed it. It is therefore called ‘new.’
11And the priests and the prophets said to the princes and to all the people, saying, "This man is liable to death, for he prophesied concerning this city, as you have heard with your ears.
12And Jeremiah said to all the princes and to all the people saying, "The Lord sent me to prophesy concerning this house and concerning this city all the words that you have heard.
13And now, mend your ways and your deeds and heed the Lord your God, and the Lord will renounce the evil that He has spoken concerning you.
14As for me, behold I am in your hands; do to me what you deem good and proper.
15But you should know that if you put me to death, that you are bringing innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and upon its inhabitants, for indeed God sent me concerning you, to speak into your ears all these words."
16And the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets, "This man is not liable to the death sentence, for he spoke to us in the name of the Lord our God."
17Then certain of the elders of the land rose and said to all the congregation of the people, saying:
18Micah the Morashtite was prophesying in the days of Hezekiah the king of Judah, saying: So said the Lord of Hosts: Zion shall be plowed for a field, and Jerusalem shall be heaps, and the Temple Mount as the high places of a forest.
Micah the Morashtite: Who was from Maresha.
heaps: עִיִּים, heaps.
19Did Hezekiah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord? And he entreated the Lord, and the Lord renounced the evil that He had spoken concerning them. But we are doing great harm to ourselves.
and he entreated: Heb. וַיְחַל, an expression of prayer.
but we are doing great harm to ourselves: if we kill him.
20Also a man was prophesying in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath-jearim, and he prophesied concerning this city and concerning this land, like all the words of Jeremiah.
Also a man was prophesying: The one who said this did not say this. I.e., those who related the incident of Micah did not relate the incident concerning Uriah. Up to here are the words of the righteous. Now the wicked who were there arose and said, “Also a man was prophesying, etc.” Just as Uriah was killed, so shall Jeremiah be killed. In this way it is explained in Sifrei (Num. 11:7).
21And King Jehoiakim and all his mighty warriors and all the princes heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death, and Uriah heard and he was afraid, and he fled and came to Egypt.
22And King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt, Elnathan son of Achbor and men with him to Egypt.
23And they took Uriah out of Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, and he struck him with the sword and cast his corpse into the graves of the common people.
24But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, not to deliver him into the hand[s] of the people to put him to death.
