Are Brown Eggs Kosher?

Brown eggs have "meat spots" which is almost as bad a misnomer as "blood spots," since those spots are not blood nor meat. No blood in those brownish-red spots seen in the egg whites of brown eggs, ever.

What are those spots? They are tiny leftover bits of brown coloring that brown chickens produce to color their naturally white eggshells brown. And the reason you don't find them in white eggs is because white hens do not color their eggshells, so there isn't any coloring to accidentally get inside their eggs.

There are not "more" of these in brown eggs; there are none of these in white eggs.

Grocery store eggs are from industrially raised hens...even free-range eggs. None of them are raised with roosters, so there is no chance that any of those eggs are fertilized.

Blood spots are red. The little brown specks are protein deposits and are not blood spots. Reply

You can eat a fertilized egg and never know because there won't be any blood unless it is been incubated for three to four days. In fact, many people who eat organic, free range chicken eggs (from those with roosters) have eaten fertilized eggs and not known. Likewise, a bloodspot can occur randomly in the egg laying process. actually how the hens are kept (battery or free range) does not have any influence on the colour of the eggs. Certain hens lay eggs of certain colour, depending on the race. Because of consumer demand there are more organic brown eggs, it is a urban myth that they are more healthy or from more animal friendly breeding. The colour of the yolk is dependent on the feed they get, with organic eggs usually having lighter yellow yolks, and chicks raised on power feed having more orange-tinted yolks.
It is rather difficult to get white organic eggs, because consumers who usually buy organic eggs think that brown ones are healthier. It seems you had the same idea about them. I aways buy organic, and as they are brown they really have more blood spots in them. I just take away the blood spots (perfectly ok, easy with a grapefruit knife!). Reply

White eggs Everyone knows that White eggs are hatched from battery hens. That is one of the main reasons why the eggs rarely have blood spots. Why should these eggs be considered kosher when the cruelty to the bird is well known. I thought there was a requirement in our religion to treat animals with humane care. Please do comment. Reply

there is a way to check an egg once it has been boiled. if there was a bloodspot on the yolk, it will have transfered to the white of the egg that touches the yolk. some do have the custom of checking eggs, even if boiled Reply
