True story: Back when I practiced Judaism more traditionally, I managed to upset a waiter in a Kosher Chinese Restaurant. I wastotally unaware until the Rabbi clued me in! I ordered steamed vegetables and rice. The waiter gave me a look that could have caused water to freeze! It turns out, steamed veggies and rice tended to be what people ordered when they didn't trust the kosher oversight of the restaurant! At that time I was eating low fat to zero fat, and I am a vegetarian. I still wish I'd had the chance to explain! Reply

Minucha Chicago March 6, 2025

I got 9 out of 10 correct. I also tripped up on #10. Reply

Jim Krämer Pittsburgh, PA, USA March 6, 2025

9/10
I missed the one about Monkfish—I don't think I've ever seen a Monkfish! I have not eaten meat or fish since 1990 (Vegetarian but not an activist. Eat what you like; just don't let it wander over to my plate, haha!). I did know about giraffes, only I don't know anyone who has ever tasted one! Thank you again, Rabbi Posner, you make learning a true pleasure! Reply

The question regarding salt does not have the correct answer. 'all' salt is not kosher, since not all salt is processed with rabbinical oversight. It is also true that salt that is called "kosher" salt may or may not truly be kosher, either. The symbol(s) used by the various kosher overseers must be present and must also have provenance of the process and the particular mashgiach who approved the process and product. Reply

Ari PNW March 6, 2025

That last one is a trick question... I had no idea that was a myth, it's so pervasive, that's nuts! Y'all got me good there. 9/10 for someone who only keeps "kosher-adjacent" is pretty good. (I just avoid eating unkosher animals, and generally don't eat meat and milk in the same bite. lol... Baby steps.) Reply

in response to Ari :

Good Morning, Ari
Question #10 - I once saw a film of a giraffe being slaughtered. The ribs looked pretty good, but where do they sell giraffe meat in America? Lions also have problems finding where to kill a giraffe. I guess Amercans don't import giraffe meat. Well, I guess that's off the menu for a possible kosher dinner. :)) Kosher is not a problem for me as I love seafood, and not milk. This quiz was really fun!

Thank you,

Best wishes Reply

Good Morning,

WHAT A FUN QUIZ! Monkfish - I've heard of but I have never seen any; A Spider - No; Monkcrab - Why? - imitation can't possibly be safe to eat, a Burro, even without kosher laws, it looks so sad just leave it be.

Have a wonderful day! Reply

Raymond West Hollywood March 4, 2025

I scored 9/10. The one question I got wrong on this was the very last one, the one about the giraffe. I knew that giraffes are kosher, but I had thought that because it is so hard to determine exactly how to properly slaughter it due to its unusual neck, that it made it impractical to actually eat it Reply

NesanelS NJ March 4, 2025

Yup apparently that's a myth. Had to investigate after this quiz. I also took got 9/10, that last one tricked me good. Reply

Axel Berger Köln-Ossendorf March 6, 2025
in response to Raymond :

It wasn't the myth that tricked me but the, actually correct, "not practically relevant". As the explanation behind the question says, nobody eats giraffe, at least not here. And of course, when nobody slaughters an animal, nobody is taught how to. Reply

Raymond West Hollywood March 5, 2025
in response to NesanelS:

i never heard of monkfish either, so I figured that since I never heard of it even in traditional Jewish circles, that probably Jews do not eat it, and that they do not eat it because it is not kosher. btw, I still have no idea what monkfish are Reply

Raymond West Hollywood March 7, 2025
in response to Rivka Rachum:

One of the things I like about the kosher laws is that it prohibits us from eating some of the most hideous looking animals on the planet. I am thinking here in particular of things like lobster, crab, octopus, snails, and shrimp, all of which, btw, are really insects.. and yet in some social circles, such animals are considered to be delicacies. Can you imagine? And then there is the pig, who is kind of gross looking, too, and in addition, are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. They know all too well when they are about to be slaughtered and it terrifies them. How can anyone in good conscience eat such an animal? and even with those animals that are kosher and not gross, such as the gentle, peaceful cow, we can only eat them if they are slaughtered in such a way as to cause them virtually no pain. There is such humanity in Jewish law Reply

Raymond West Hollywood March 5, 2025

I actually do think that it was a trick question Reply
