I realize this answer is much later in its forthcoming than your request (as I just read it myself) but yes, in case you never got your answer, the two temples were destroyed on Tisha B'av. Also it is the date when Jews were ejected from Spain and on another year on the same date they were expelled from England. This is just a handful of events - I know there are many more. I've likened it to a scratch in an LP record that extends the entire recording and sometimes when the needle hits the scratch major things happen, other times just a minor blip. It is a bonafide reason for fasting on this date - as catastrophies are bound to happen, and G-D works with dates, numbers and symbols when dealing with His people. So to if an adult does not listen to his parent, G-d, he too will not get the treats he desires.
