I was raised in NY on the Lower East Side. Went to a Ortodox Yeshiva and then on to University and Graduate School. Have not seen or used there words in many years. Chabad is a wonderful organization and deserves our love and support for all they contribute. God bless all who work in Jewish Outreach. Reply

My parent did not grow up religious, no one speaks yiddish in my house. I know a few words that are common but nothing more that that. But you could be right, I might have this secret place in my brain that I don’t know about that understands Yiddish! Reply

Wow!
I really love them.
And the one from handyman (yerachmiel comes as a highly-recommended Klutz), yea I was laughing out loud. Or the one from the hug. really funny, but I learned some of this. Reply

NS NJ November 26, 2020

About taking off your shoes to make yourself heimish, granted; if a person likes to, by all means, but sometimes people would rather keep their shoes on! (Maybe if I brought along soft slippers!:)
I'm just being heimish here, and kibbitzing around! (Another Yiddish word - it means being very serious, right?!:) Reply

When I was engaged and living in Ann Arbor I was asked if I was going to wear a shtetl after I got married. I said I thought a shtetl would be rather heavy, and I planned on using scarves, but I would cover my hair.
Shtetl means a town.
Shaitel means a wig.
Forty plus years on and I'm still wearing tichels (scarves). Reply

Abbe Roswell,N.M. July 11, 2020

Ok stuck in Roswell, ( alien junk) town in the desert who moved here from Jewtown Roswell,Ga and still got 10/10. Yeah, no hatch green chili involved. Reply

Pauline NYC October 21, 2018

I got 10/10 but heck, not all of them are yiddish! 'Balagan' is Hebrew, 'Shadchan' is lashon hakodesh, and so is 'chazer' and 'treif'.
Now who really knows Yiddish around here? Reply
