Stanley (Talchum) Esofsky passed away on March 27 due to complications from COVID-19.
He served as secretary of the prestigious Gateshead Talmudical College for almost six decades.
Esofsky was born in Leeds, England, in 1932. In his youth, he spent two years teaching at the Beth Hasepher school in Belfast, Northern Ireland, until his departure in 1960.
“He was well-liked by his pupils, who touchingly collected signatures after the Beth Hesepher prize day asking him to stay, and also money for a farewell present,” reported the Belfast Jewish Record in January of 1960. “He has now gone back to England, where he will continue his teaching career. He will be missed here for his sincere and self-effacing character, and best wishes accompany him into the future.”
A year later, in 1961, he joined Gateshead Talmudical College.
In 1967, he married Nicole Nordmann, when he was already working as the yeshivah secretary.
