[The Scriptural Commandments of Pesach] include1 eight mitzvos: three positive commandments and five negative commandments. They are:

יֵשׁ בִּכְלָלָן1 שְׁמוֹנֶה מִצְוֹת, שָׁלֹשׁ מִצְוֹת עֲשֵׂה וְחָמֵשׁ מִצְוֹת לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה, וְזֶהוּ פְּרָטָן:א

1 Not to eat chametz from noon of the fourteenth of Nissan onward;2

6 During all [of] the seven [days of Pesach], not to eat a mixture of chametz [and other food] that contains a kezayis [i.e., an olive-sized portion of chametz] in an amount of [the] mixture [which is the size of] a p’ras.7[This applies] even though one does not taste the chametz at all in [the mixture], and [the chametz] was included only as a fermenting agent. For example, Babylonian kutach (“whey”) to which chametz was added as a fermenting agent, i.e., bread crumbs are mixed with [the kutach] to make it sour; thus the kutach does not have the flavor of the bread, only its souring factor, i.e., [the chametz] is what turns the kutach sour. In parallel instances concerning other forbidden [foods], there is no Scriptural prohibition. Nevertheless, the Torah ruled stringently regarding chametz on Pesach, stating,8 “Do not eat anything that is leavened,” [including] even a mixture [of chametz]. However, one is only liable for kareis when the mixture has the flavor of chametz,9as is [the law] regarding other forbidden [foods], as will be explained in sec. 442[:9] and in Yoreh Deah, sec. 91.10

ו שֶׁלֹּאז לֶאֱכֹל כָּל שִׁבְעָה תַּעֲרֹבֶת חָמֵץח שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ כְּזַיִת בִּכְדֵי אֲכִילַת פְּרָסט,7 מֵהַתַּעֲרֹבֶת,י אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁבַּאֲכִילַת הַתַּעֲרֹבֶת אֵין טוֹעֲמִים כְּלָל הֶחָמֵץ שֶׁבְּתוֹכוֹ, וְאֵין נוֹתְנִים בְּתוֹכוֹ אֶת הֶחָמֵץ אֶלָּא לְקִיּוּהָא בְּעָלְמָא,יא כְּגוֹן כּוּתָח (פֵּרוּשׁ נַסְיוֹבָא דַּחֲלָבָאיב) הַבַּבְלִי,יג שֶׁמְּפָרְרִין בְּתוֹכוֹ פֵּרוּרֵי לֶחֶם חָמֵץ לְהַחְמִיצוֹ, שֶׁאֵין בַּכּוּתָח טַעַם הַלֶּחֶם, אֶלָּא חֲמִיצוּת הַלֶּחֶם הֶחְמִיץ אֶת הַכּוּתָח, שֶׁכַּיּוֹצֵא בָּזֶה בִּשְׁאָר אִסּוּרִין אֵין כָּאן אִסּוּר מִן הַתּוֹרָה,יד אֲבָל בְּחָמֵץ בְּפֶסַח הֶחֱמִירָה תּוֹרָה וְאָמְרָה.8 "כָּל מַחְמֶצֶת לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ", אֲפִלּוּ תַּעֲרָבְתּוֹ.טו אֲבָל כָּרֵת אֵינוֹ חַיָּב,טז אֶלָּא אִם כֵּן יֵשׁ בְּתַעֲרָבְתּוֹ טַעַם חָמֵץ9 כְּמוֹ בִּשְׁאָר אִסּוּרִים, וּכְמוֹ שֶׁיִּתְבָּאֵר בְּסִימָן תמ"ביז וּבְיוֹרֶה דֵּעָה סִימָן צ"א:יח,10

7 To eat matzah on the night of the fifteenth of Nissan;11
