SECTION 301 How a Person Should Walk on Shabbos; Places Where One Should Not Walk; Which Utensils and Articles He May Carry and Which He May Not Carry; What One Should Do If His Clothes Become Soaked (1-2)

A Supplementary Introduction to the Section.1

It is written:2 “If you restrain your feet because of the Shabbos… and you honor it by refraining from following your ordinary ways.” [The implication is that] the manner in which one walks on Shabbos should not resemble the manner in which he walks during the week.3 Therefore, it is forbidden on Shabbos to run or to spring,4i.e., for one to lift up both feet at the same time,5 or to skip, i.e., to lift one’s second leg before he sets down his first, or to take overly large strides, i.e., steps that leave a space larger than a cubit between the tip of one’s large toe on one foot and the tip of his large toe on the other. [All the above is only forbidden] when one has the option of taking smaller [steps], i.e., there is neither mire nor mud nor an irrigation channel [in his path],6 as will be explained.7 [Moreover,] even during the [other days of the] week, one should not take overly large strides [unnecessarily], because doing so causes a person to lose 1/500th of his power of sight.8
