SECTION 295 The Havdalah Recited by the Sheliach Tzibbur (1-5)

סימן רצה הַבְדָּלָה שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה שְׁלִיחַ צִבּוּר וּבוֹ ה' סְעִיפִים:

1 It is customary to recite V’yhi noam1because it is the psalm of blessing with which Moshe blessed the Jewish people when they completed the task of [constructing] the Sanctuary.2 It is customary to repeat the verse Orech yamim,3because,by doing so, the verses yield [the numerical equivalent] of a particular Divine name.4

[Afterwards,] it is customary to recite the Order of Kedushah.5 We begin with the verse V’Atah Kadosh6and not the verse U’va leTziyon goel,7because the redemption will not take place at night.8

This entire prolonged addition is made after the Evening Service on Saturday night so that the Jewish people will delay the completion of their prayers, in order to delay the return of the wicked to Gehinnom [after their Shabbos respite].9For their [return] is postponed until the last congregation of the Jewish people completes their prayers.

2 There are those who, because of an esoteric reason, recite the verse V’yhi noam while standing.10

3 If a festival11 or Yom Kippur falls on one of the weekdays of the coming week, even on Friday, it is not customary to recite V’yhi noam. [The rationale is that] since [that verse] contains the phrase “Stabilize for us the work of our hands” twice, all of the six days of the week must be fit to perform work during them. If, however, [the festival] falls on the coming Shabbos, [the psalm] is recited.

When this psalm is not recited, it is also not customary to recite the verse V’Atah Kadosh and the entire Order of Kedushah. [The rationale is that] the verse V’yhi noam relates to the work of [constructing] the Sanctuary through which the Divine Presence rested within Israel. This is [also the theme of] the verse V’Atah Kadosh, [which means]: “You, holy One, are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.” Therefore, they are always recited one after the other.

[The series of blessings beginning] Veyitein lecha12is, however, recited in all circumstances.

4 [After the Evening Service,] is customary for the sheliach tzibbur to recite Havdalah over wine in the synagogue to fulfill the obligation of anyone who does not have wine at home over which to recite Havdalah.13([The sheliach tzibbur] himself should drink from the cup [of wine]14 if he intends to fulfill his own obligation with this recitation of Havdalah.15Alternatively, [if he does not intend to fulfill his obligation,] he should give it to another person – who seeks to fulfill his obligation – to drink. If, however, he merely gives it to children to drink,16 no one may fulfill his obligation with this recitation of Havdalah, since no [adult] who desired to fulfill his obligation with this recitation of Havdalah drank from this wine.)17

5 It is customary to mention and recall the prophet Eliyahu on Saturday night after Havdalah, as a prayer that he will come and announce the redemption.18 For Eliyahu will not come on a Friday, so as not to disturb the Jewish people from their involvement in [preparing] their Shabbos needs. Nor will he come on a Shabbos [according to the view that] the prohibition [against going beyond the Shabbos] limits19 applies [equally to non-terrestrial journeys, for they are] more than ten handbreadths [above the ground].20 Therefore, we are praying that since Shabbos has already passed and Eliyahu can [now] arrive, he should indeed come and announce [the forthcoming redemption].
