SECTION 601 Directives for the Second Day of Rosh HaShanah. (1–2)

סימן תרא סֵדֶר יוֹם שֵׁנִי שֶׁל רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה וּבוֹ ב' סְעִיפִים:

1 On the second day [of Rosh HaShanah], the Shacharis and Mussaf prayers are recited as on the first day.1 [The Torah Reading begins with] “…and G‑d tested Avraham” until the end of the parshah,2 in order to recall the Binding of Yitzchak.3 The person called to the Torah as maftir4 reads the same passage from the Torah5 as on the previous day.6 Then, for the haftorah, he reads from the Book of Yirmeyahu: “Thus said G‑d…” until [and including] “[Ephraim,] My cherished son.”7 [This passage is chosen] because [among] the obligations of this day is the arousal of [positive] remembrances, and that passage includes the words, “I remember him more and more, therefore My inward parts are moved for him….”

2 At the conclusion of Rosh HaShanah, Havdalah is recited both in the Shemoneh Esreh and [later] over a cup of wine, as is done on Motzaei Shabbos. As at the conclusion of other festivals, no blessing is made over spices or over fire, as explained in sec. 491[:1]; see that source.8
