SECTION 100 The Requirement to Prepare for the Recitation of the Festival Prayers. (1)

סימן ק תְּפִלַּת הַמּוֹעֵד צָרִיךְ לְסַדֵּר וּבוֹ סָעִיף אֶחָד:

1 The Shemoneh Esreh prayers recited on the festivals and Rosh Chodesh are not very familiar because they are not recited constantly, only on occasion. One must therefore prepare in advance for their recitation1 so that they will flow readily from his mouth.

Nowadays it is customary to be lenient in this regard, and there are those who find a redeeming quality in this practice. They argue that this preparation is required only when one prays by heart, whereas when one prays from a text [it] is not required, because one can see [the text] he should recite. Nevertheless, with regard to any prayer whose comprehension presents a challenge, one must certainly study and practice its recitation beforehand; having a text will not serve [as a substitute] for doing so. In particular, this applies with regard to the lyrical hymns,2 for their meaning is difficult to grasp.

א תְּפִלָּה שֶׁל מוֹעֲדוֹתא וְשֶׁל רָאשֵׁי חֳדָשִׁיםב אֵין אָדָם רָגִיל בָּהֶן כָּל כָּךְ, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִתְפַּלֵּל אוֹתָן תָּדִיר אֶלָּא לִפְרָקִים, לְפִיכָךְ צָרִיךְ לְהַסְדִּיר אוֹתָן מִתְּחִלָּה קֹדֶם שֶׁיִּתְפַּלֵּל,1 כְּדֵי שֶׁתְּהֵא תְּפִלָּתוֹ שְׁגוּרָה בְּפִיו.ג

וְעַכְשָׁו נוֹהֲגִים לְהָקֵל בָּזֶה.ד וְיֵשׁ שֶׁלִּמְּדוּ זְכוּת עֲלֵיהֶם לוֹמַר, שֶׁלֹּא הִצְרִיכוּ לְהַסְדִּיר אֶלָּא כְּשֶׁמִּתְפַּלְלִין בְּעַל פֶּה, אֲבָל כְּשֶׁמִּתְפַּלְלִין מִתּוֹךְ הַסֵּפֶרה – אֵין צָרִיךְ לְהַסְדִּיר, שֶׁהֲרֵי רוֹאֶה מַה שֶּׁמִּתְפַּלֵּל. וּמִכָּל מָקוֹם, תְּפִלָּה שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְהָבִין פֵּרוּשׁ הַדְּבָרִים וַדַּאי צָרִיךְ לִלְמֹד וּלְהַסְדִּיר תְּחִלָּה, שֶׁאֵין סֵפֶר מוֹעִיל לוֹ בָּזֶה,ו בִּפְרָט בְּפִיּוּטִים2 שֶׁחָמוּר פֵּרוּשָׁם:
