“Wash the hands without reciting the berachah of al netilat yadayim.”

QUESTION: Why are the hands washed without a berachah?

ANSWER: According to halachah (Shulchan Aruch Harav 168:3) before one eats something dipped in liquid, the hands must be washed. Some hold that this applies only to former times when people were mindful in observing purity. Thus, since there is a doubt about this requirement nowadays, a berachah is not recited.

The washing is done tonight even by those who do not practice it throughout the year since the washing of hands without a berachah and eating vegetables before the meal will stimulate the child’s asking questions.
