1) It is forbidden to call one’s father by his name.

2) If the father has the same name as other people, but it is an uncommon name that is not usually encountered; if the son wishes to address someone else with that name, he must change the name slightly.

3) If the father’s name is one that is commonly encountered, and the son wishes to address someone else with that name, it is permitted when not in the father’s presence. Some say that it is permitted even when the father is present.

4) If the son is asked, “Whose son are you?” he is permitted to answer, “I am the son of R. ….”

5) If the father is ill, and the son wishes to recite a mi shabeirach prayer in his behalf, some say that he should not state the father’s name, but should say instead, “…my father ben….”
