Blessings for the reading of the Megillah

Before reading the the Megillah, the reader recites the following three blessings:

Blessings Transliterated:

1. Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-olom A-sher Ki-de-sho-nu Be-mitz-vo-sov Ve-tzi-vo-nu Al Mikra Megillah.

2. Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-olom She-o-so Ni-sim La-avo-sei-nu Ba-yo-mim Ho-heim Bi-z'man Ha-zeh

3. Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-olom She-heche-yo-nu Ve-ki-yi-mo-nu Ve-higi-o-nu Liz-man Ha-zeh.

Does one make the berachos of Megilla and Shecheyanu when reading other Megilos (like Ruth on Shevuos)? Is the answer different when reading from a Klaf? Reply

The beracha of Megilla refers also to the other Megilos (Tractate Soferim 14:3).

However, in practice there is some discussion on how to apply this. Practically, for those that read Ruth on Shavuos both berachos can be made if it's a public reading from a klaf. Overall, each person should follow the custom of their local community. Reply

Purim Why does the blessing say, "...Ve-tzi-vo-nu Al Mikra Megillah" if G-d never commanded us to read the megillah? Reply

Here is the text of the blessing in English:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who wages our battles, defends our rights, avenges the wrong done to us, punishes our oppressors in behalf, and brings retribution upon all our mortal enemies. Blessed are You Lord, who exacts payment in behalf of His people Israel from all their oppressors; God who delivers. (Amen)
