Sukkot 2023 begins at sunset on September 29, 2023 and ends at nightfall on October 6, 2023. The first two days of Sukkot (from sundown of the first date listed, until nightfall two days later) are full-fledged, no-work-allowed holiday days. The subsequent days are Chol Hamoed, when work is allowed, albeit with restrictions. The final day of Sukkot is known as Hoshanah Rabbah. Sukkot is immediately followed by the holiday of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

Here are the dates for Sukkot for upcoming years:

2024: Sundown on October 16 - Nightfall on October 23

2025: Sundown on October 6 - Nightfall on October 13

2026: Sundown on September 25 - Nightfall on October 2

2027: Sundown on October 15 - Nightfall on October 22

Note: The Jewish calendar date begins at sundown of the night beforehand. Thus all holiday observances begin at sundown on the secular dates listed, with the following day being the first full day of the holiday. Jewish calendar dates conclude at nightfall.

Hi. Can somebody please explain to me, why we shake the Lulav? Where did the idea of the Lulav originate from? What is the symbolism of the Lulav and the Etrog? Warm regards Tracy Seeger Reply

The shaking of the Lulav and Etrog traces back to the Torah, where we are told to take turn for ourselves on the first day of Sukkos (Leviticus 23:40).

There are many layers of symbolism to the Lulav and Etrog. One of them is that the four species represent all the diverse types of Jews. Binding them together and waving them in all directions is a sign of unity of the Jewish nation, no matter who they are or where they may be.

This year for people living in Israel is Sukkot work-related prohibition on the 29th nightfall and 30th only or also on October the 1st? Reply

In 2023 the first day of Sukkot falls on Shabbat so work is prohibited in any case. In Israel only the 29th evening and 30th of September is a holiday, the 1st through the 6th is chol hamoed, the intermediate days. Reply

In general, all actions that are prohibited on Shabbos are also prohibited on festivals, apart from actions connected with food preparation. The details of that rule are quite complex.
