Epic Exposition: About the Conference
EPIC EXPOSITION: THE AYIN BET DISCOURSES AND THE MYSTICAL THOUGHT OF RABBI SHALOM DOVBER SCHNEERSOHN OF LUBAVITCH (RASHAB)
CENTER FOR JEWISH HISTORY, 15 West 16th Street New York, NY 10011
Monday Tammuz 12 5772, July 2 2012
One hundred years (5672-5772 / 1912-2012) since Rabbi Shalom DovBer Schneersohn of Lubavitch (RaShaB) began delivery of a uniquely substantial and esoteric series of Habad hasidic discourses, an eclectic and distinguished group of scholars will meet at the Center for Jewish History the 2nd of July 2012 to discuss the innovative features of his thought.
Generally referred to as Ayin Bet, signifying the Hebrew year in which delivery was initiated, this landmark mystical treatise is at once the most cryptic and the most prolific of its genre.
The aim of this conference is to highlight innovative themes in RaShaB’s thought in general, within the wider context of Jewish mysticism and the development of the Habad school specifically. Special attention will be given to the Ayin Bet discourses particularly.
In addition, this conference will be an opportunity for academically trained scholars and internal Habad scholars to share differing perspectives, entering into a collaborative and mutually enriching dialogue. We hope too, to shed light on the enduring relevance of RaShaB's mystical thought to the scholars and thinkers of today's day and age.
The conference is being hosted by a joint committee consisting of Prof. Naftali Loewenthal (University College London), Prof. Lawrence Schiffman (Yeshiva University), Prof. Elliot Wolfson (New York University), Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin (Chabad.org), and Rabbi Menachem Schmidt (Chabad on Campus).
The conference is a joint project of Chabad.org and Chabad on Campus
