The Torah then discusses the laws regarding ritual defilement brought about by abnormal, non-menstrual bleeding.
There is Always Hope
וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי וגו':
(ויקרא טו:כט)
On the eighth day . . .
Leviticus 15:29
On an allegorical level, abnormal uterine bleeding, i.e., that occurs outside the menstrual cycle, alludes to an abnormal exaggeration of self-centeredness. Just as abnormal uterine bleeding imparts a more serious degree of ritual defilement, requiring more elaborate rituals designed to enable the woman to restore herself to full ritual purity, so does exaggerated self-centeredness require more intense spiritual treatment than normal.
Nonetheless, the fact that the Torah prescribes purification rituals for abnormal uterine bleeding teach us that the power of repentance is such that even someone who is suffering from excessive spiritual “maladies” can still be cured.1
