Fishing Festival in Jaffa

This oil painting shows the annual fishing festival departing from the port of Jaffa. In the background are the clustered buildings of Old Jaffa. In the far background are the lights of Tel Aviv, while in the sky, fireworks announce the beginning of the festival. All the fishermen are going out in unison, as they celebrate G‑d's bounty. The origins of this festival are ancient and unknown, although the local tradition is that it goes back to the time of the ancient Hebrews.
