It is dawn in Jerusalem. The light is clear. A bent woman lays her head upon the stones; the men are draped in a sea of undulating black and white prayer shawls. The morning service has begun.

A Zav who saw a seminal emission, a niddah who emitted semen from prior sexual relations and a woman who had marital relations that saw her niddah (period): they are required to immerse in a mikvah. However, Rabbi Yehudah exempts them [from mikvah in-order to study Torah].

Mishnah 5

If one was standing in prayer and remembers that he is a baal keri, he does not stop praying, rather he should abbreviate the prayer. If he went down to immerse in a mikvah, if he is able to come up, cover himself and recite the Shema before sunrise – he should rise, cover himself and recite the Shema. But if he is not able to do so – he should cover himself in the water and recite the Shema. But he may not cover himself, not in foul waters, and not in water in-which flax was soaked, (one may not recite the Shema in front of urine); until he pours water into it. A

Mishnah 4

The Baal Keri mentally reads the Shema in his heart, but doesn’t need to do the same for its blessings, not for its preceding blessings and not for its following blessings. And for food: he blesses the after-blessing, but not the preceding-blessing. Rabbi Yehudah says: he even recites the preceding and following blessings.

Those who buried the deceased and have returned; if they are able to start and finish before returning to the line, they should begin [to recite the Shema], but if not, they do not begin. As for those standing in the line; the inner ones are exempt and the outer ones are obligated.
