The solar year is longer than the lunar year. The seasons are determined by the movement of the sun. But the Jewish People set their months and festivals by the moon. Every few years, we add a thirteenth month to synchronize the two cycles.

The sun’s light is unchanging. The moon on the other hand, is never the same; it is always changing. G-d created people as a reflection of the world. Our lives must mirror these two ideas of constancy and change.

This is the lesson from a leap year. The service of both the sun and the moon must come together and unite. We must have a measure of constancy, but must also be flexible and adaptive to change.
