The Significance of a Rebbe's 10th Yahrtzeit

The following is a freely translated excerpt from a letter by the Lubavitcher Rebbe dated February 4, 1960, issued to his chassidim on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the passing of his predecessor, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, which occurs on the Hebrew date Shevat 10:

The Rebbe's 10th yahrtzeit carries a special significance, as expressed by the verse (Leviticus 27:32): "The tenth shall be holy." We draw down this holiness into our world with our avodah (life's work and service of G-d), by engaging the ten powers1 of our two souls2 with the ten types of human activities3 in a world created through ten Divine utterances4.

Certainly the Rebbe's yahrtzeit should be utilized to conduct an honest soul-searching and stock-taking of what has been done in the last ten years, compared to what could and should have been accomplished, and to resolve, in a most deep and penetrating way, to achieve it, and to surpass it with an ever-ascending increase in light.

The Rebbe's merit will surely protect us and grant us much success in all of the above: to disseminate, with tranquility, joy and goodness of heart, the Torah, its mitzvot, and their inner soul -- the wellsprings of Chassidic teaching -- to the very "outside," thereby bringing Moshiach5.

Thus will be fulfilled the Divine promise (Genesis 28:14): "And you shall burst forth to the west, to the east, to the north and to the south."

FOOTNOTES
1. As described in the writings of Kabbalah and explained in the teachings of Chassidism, the human soul possesses ten "powers", corresponding to the ten supernal sefirot: the three "mind" faculties of conception, comprehension and knowledge, and the seven emotional and motivational attributes of love, awe, beauty, ambition, devotion, bonding and sovreignty (for more on the sefirot and the ten powers of the soul, click here).
2. As outlined in the basic Chassidic work Tanya, every individual has two "souls": an "animal soul" which embodies the drive for self-preservation and self enhancement; and a "G-dly soul" driven by the desire to cleave to G-d. Each soul is equipped with a full set of ten "powers" (see previous note) which it engages in the pursuit of its goals. Ultimately, both souls have a role in a person's avodah: when properly mastered and directed, the drives and powers of the "animal soul" are equal partners in man's service of G-d (for more on the two souls click here).
3. Enumerated in Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, Laws of Character, beginning of chapter 5
4. As described in the 1st chapter of Genesis, the world was created by a sequence of ten Divine utterances: "Let there be light," "Let the earth bring forth vegetation," etc. This implies that creation consists of ten elemental components, each with a distinct divinely-imbued significance (see the Rebbe's elucidations on Ethics of the Fathers 5:1).
5. The founder of Chassidism, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1698-1760), describes in a letter how he ascended to the heavenly chamber of Moshiach (the messiah) and asked him, "When will you come?" To which Moshiach replied: "When your wellsprings (i.e., the teachings of Chassidism) shall spread to the outside."
