Navel of the Universe

A people... that dwell at the navel of the earth.
(Ezekiel 38:12)

When the earth was first conceived
In the mind of G-d
When the universe was no more than
a whispered, "Let There Be,"
When time's heartbeat began its relentless rhythm
The energy of life surged through the umbilicus
to the new creation
And Israel was the navel of the world.
Through it flowing the liquid nurture of our existence
The sweet milk and honey that would sustain
the nascent cosmos.
Swirling within the memory of our souls
Is that still-pulsing connection to the Source of life
And a time when we were nestled
under the Heart.

Navel of the universe
what a stunning piece of poetry. i note that the first half of the poem beats like the umbilical cord itself, whereas the second half flows much more freely, with a heartbeat rhythm in the last line- masterly. this poem is as beautiful as Dr. Silberstein's other articles are erudite!

a wonderful poem for this time of year; pressing into the spiritual need of community and offering a need to belong and sense of strong identity. thank you for sharing it.
