Riding the Birth Wave

Giving birth with confidence demands that you commit to labor with the understanding and acceptance that it is not easy – otherwise they would have called it something else

How I wish this type of thinking was prevalent when I was was in my childbirthing years. Isn't it ironic that I am learning about birthing naturally from the daughter I birthed? Wow!
Excellent, informative and soulful writing.

Thank you.
I have given birth 8 times. 4 times in a hospital, 4 times at home with a midwife. My oldest is 18, and the youngest is 6 months "out". (not 6 months old, being born didn't change her humanity) If I had had your advice, I would have had an much easier time! Much of your advice I learned the hard way. Maybe I'll be back for #9! Thank you, I'll be sending friends and my midwife to your site! Ariel

Riding the Birth Wave
Sarah, this is brilliant! Thank you so much for this introduction in your work.
We have a Women's Interfaith Group and our next topic is Birthing Rituals in our Traditions. This could not have come at a better time!
Shalom,

Enjoy your labor
Bravo! During labor of my fourth child in August 2005, I must say that I enjoyed the process not to mention the result. It was a truely rewarding experience and I didn't feel out of control. My son taught me the meaning of being patient during labor. It was beautiful when he finally arrived. We were both very much at ease Baruh Hashem!

Thank you for being so positive about childbirth!

wow! i'm so inspired. i love your outlook. it's spiritual; you believe in the powers G-d instilled in the body, you believe in G-d's power to give the body it's own power. thank you so much, how enlightening and fresh!

Child labor awareness
Thank you for this inspiring article. I will read it again and again until your 4 awareness points have become my own. Hopefully well in time for Nisan when my son is due! Living in Denmark, surrounded by water, riding the waves makes sense to me, too!B´shalom

L'Mazeltov-Insprirational Words of Wisdom
I enjoyed your soulful article very much. In my book, L'Mazeltov:Your Personal Guide to Jewish Childbirth Education, we speak of the importance of tapping into your own personal resources, harness your energy, and above all: stay calm during labor and delivery. "With Each Child the World Begins Anew"- Talmud- Take hold of your strength, courage and spirit to be confident in labor and delivery.May all of you and your babies be blessed with good health, prosperity, and many Mitzvot.

Birth of Twins
I was with some friends, several women. The women talked of children. As a man, my experience is limited. But I plunged in: I told the story of the expectant mother told that the unborn children were fighting.

I recalled what RAMBAN wrote of this: That babies fighting is what it feels like to carry twins.. One woman, Jewish in a mixed group, remembered the story, too familiar to repeat, and commented, "How does he know!" A good question I thougfht.

Surfing the Wave to birth a child
I found this very interesting, as a grandmother, about to be grandmother again.

It's very true, we do experience contractions in waves, and I had not thought about this for a long time. And yet, in writing down, what's 'coming' to me it seems I have had to surf the wave, which is the term my husband uses for my often intense nightly "revelations".

I woke to HEAR the word BABY, as in the aleph bet, the "A", "B".

Perhaps I am primed for this because my daughter is giving birth soon. All the same the alphabet, the aleph bet, seems to be "coming" to me, as in the letters deconstruct and I see more and more about the universe. Babel itself contains the notion of Babe and EL. And it is also a Sanscrit word meaning GATE. I tell people I am being gifted to see how the universe stems from the Hebrew letters. B A BE. How amazing IS this? And there is nothing more amazing than birth itself.

Here is something deep and something beautiful, as in this article.
