Torah Portion: Vayeishev

From our Sages on the Parshah
And the pit was empty; there was no water in it (Genesis 37:24) There was no water in it, but there were snakes and scorpions in it (Talmud)

The mind and heart of man are never empty. If there is no life-nourishing "water," there are "snakes and scorpions in it"

(The Chassidic Masters)

And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood (Genesis 37:31)

G-d pays back measure for measure... even the righteous does He pay back measure for measure. Jacob deceived his father with goatskins (when he dressed in them to disguise himself as Esau --Genesis 27:16), and his sons deceived him with the blood of a goat... Judah deceived his father with the blood of a goat, and was deceived by Tamar with a "kid of goat" (ibid. 38:17)

(The Chassidic Masters)
