Joseph: A Pictorial
1. Joseph's Coat of Many Colors

"Joseph Receives his Coat of Many Colors" by Shoshannah Brombacher; pastel and ink on paper , 24 X 18 inches, New York, 2008

Joseph was born when his father, Jacob, was already old. He was the eleventh of Jacob's twelve sons, and the firstborn son of Jacob's most beloved wife, Rachel, who died when Joseph was eight years old. Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children, and gave him a beautiful and precious present: a coat of many colors.

Although they envied him, Joseph's brothers might not have resented this so much if Joseph had not "brought evil report of his brothers to his father" (Genesis 37:2). This, in combination with his dreams about his whole family bowing down to him, made his brothers hate him, and later they would take revenge and sell him into slavery.

In this drawing Joseph looks happy. He shows his new mantle in a pastoral landscape surrounded by his father's flocks, which he and his brothers take care of. His parents gaze lovingly at him from under a green and lush tree in the right top corner, but his brothers, who tend the sheep, talk among themselves about how nasty and arrogant Joseph's behavior is towards them. The fish around Joseph are a symbol for his dreams and his imagination, and for his creative mind.

To Fred:
The Radak is not printed in the Mikraos Gedolos. But yes, it's the Radak on this very verse.

As for the translation of the Targum, we can debate... But the Radak clealy writes what I wrote above -- and he's a very Jewish source... :)

Colors
"always heard" is not a source.

The Radak is on this sentence ? which Mikras gedolos?

Artistic is not colored. By the Tachash, the Targum new the word for colors and would have used it here if it were so.

Dear Fred, I just read your comment, did not look up anything yet, but I always heard that this type of expensive coats called ketonet passim where multicolored, to make them look expensive and rich. We know this type of coats from archeological eveidence, they often had fringes too, and stripes. Colored wool is 'chique', so it was lavishly used in these coats.

Re: Colored Coat
Fred,

The concept of a colored caot is indeed found in Jewish sources, starting with Targun Yonatan, which translates ktonet pasim as "pargud mitzuyar" ("an artistic garment" ).

The Radak explains that it was a garment made of many strips, each strip a different color.

Colored coat is not Jewish View
I challenge you to find me a Jewish source for the coat being colored. Even Wiki says its not the Jewish translation nor does Rashi.
How could Chabad post such that even Rashi does not say so!
