The Jews Leave Egypt

The Jews Leave Egypt

…and it came to pass in that very day, that all the legions of the L-rd went out of the land of Egypt. It is a night of anticipation for the L-rd, to take them out of the land of Egypt; this night is the Lord's, guarding all the children of Israel throughout their generations. (Exodus 12:41-2)

The painting exudes the excitement and optimism of the Israelites leaving Egypt. As the people move past the pillars and columns that symbolize the structure and confinement of Egypt, they begin their journey to freedom. The light of a new dawn shines on their pathway and through the palm trees. The trees seem to be exploding like fireworks illuminating the darkness on this "night of anticipation."

Yoram Raanan takes inspiration from living in Israel, where he can fully explore and express his Jewish consciousness. The light, the air, the spirit of the people and the land energize and inspire him. His paintings include modern Jewish expressionism with a wide range of subjects ranging from abstract to landscape, biblical and Judaic.
