Yesher koach to R. Fine and the men who ask important questions about the Alter Rebbe's teachings. R. Fine brought the example of food being described as the " refuse of angels" as a way to deal with attachment to food for its own sake. If this expression regarding food diminishes one's "respect" and so desire for food, that is a good thing. The potential problem with the expression"vessel filled with filth" is that men are supposed to love and respect their wives. If one's respect for women is diminished by employing a similar device, harm could be done (G-d forbid ) to the proper relationship between a man and his wife. The Alter Rebbe labored over every letter, punctuation and word; so surely this expression teaches something valuable to us that in my ignorance, i do not yet grasp. Toda rabba to R. Fine and the men of the daily Tanya shiur for their frank discussion.

As a woman, i also find some difficulty with the Alter Rebbe's choice of methods for dealing with a man's selfish desires regarding a woman. I wonder why he didn't choose to state that the woman is a holy vessel because she is the vehicle through which souls enter the world, and it is disgusting to use her as a tool for satisfying one's physical cravings. The man's semen has been called " a putrid drop" but that doesn't seem to make a man less likely to desire physical relations. I am not in the place of the Alter Rebbe, so i accept that each letter, punctuation and word is correct, but Moshe Rabbeinu was instructed to speak gently to women. It is hard to read what seems to be implied by some of his statements about us. Are we the cause of men's unholy desires if we are modest? It is difficult to be referred to in such harsh terms, even for a good reason. That said, my desire to learn Tanya is not diminished in the least and neither is my respect for the Alter Rebbe.
