In our Torah portion this week, G‑d appears to Moses and Aaron and gives the Jewish people, this new nation that is set to embark on their journey to the Promised Land, their first mitzvah.

What would you think that mitzvah would be? What kind of central guiding principle would serve as the bedrock of a moral society, and was therefore chosen to be the first law given to the new nation?

Tune into this week’s ParshahCast and discover something quite unexpected!

callendar
how could the Jewish people use the sun as a caledar in the desert sice it needs a permanent building or structure, the Moon on the other hand does not need any of the above. Once in the land of Israel they were quite avare of the solar year, as we say in our prayers every day.

Fiרst mitzvah ?
The first mitzvah G-d gave us is
פרו ורבו בראשית א כ''ח
(Genesis 1 V28: Be fruitful and multiply). Lest we get big-headed about this, HaShem gave the same mitzvah to the animals BEFORE He created us - on th 5th day (we came along only on the 6th day).
Blessing the new moon may have been the first mitzvah (commandment) after we left Egypt, but it was NOT the first mitzvah.
