I disagree, at times in the truest sense of the word, Israel has been not only occupied, but possessed (government, military) by non Jews. Perhaps, then a better word than inheritance is "cherished." The Jews have probably spent more time in exile than actually owning the land as an inheritance. The term is somewhat misleading, as the land of Canaan/Israel has been possessed by Ishmaelites in the sense of property for a very long time though now it is owned by Jews. Cherished indicates a connection of the heart and that lasts eternally, but the inheritence in the most realistic sense is sometimes lost.

It would seem to me that our "inheritance" is set up as a Trust in that there are rules for use of the inheritance. "They shall inherit the land" - does that mean Jews will always have use of the land? Certainly if a person breaks secular law and goes to jail, G-d forbid, he would lose temporary use of his home (because he is imprisoned). Does that mean he loses ownership? No. When he is released from secular bondage, he returns to his "inheritance."
I also remember hearing, although I cannot recall the source, that there have always been a Pasach seder in Eretz Yisroel - even in the Dark Ages.

How can the Isaiah verse that says, "They shall inherit the land," be true? Europe's Medieval and Dark Ages was exile after exile, and it does not represent a tribe that inherits any land.
