I used to intellectually try to figure why jews had to follow the dietary laws. I figured out during the time when TORAH was written, there was no refrigeration, so it made sense that eating pork or shellfish could be deadly, where as the other meats and fish could make one really sick (one of my rationilization). I was blessed enough to hear a series of lectures by a Chasidic Rabbi. He was teaching Kabbalah, and i found it interesting, but it was the love for G-d that the Rabbi emanated, that made me really want to study Torah and I decided to do what i didn't understand JUST BECAUSE G-d said so. Also, i felt that trying to gain personal power by just studying Kabbalah and as jew, not knowing Torah, was not what g-d would want me to do. If i don't learn and follow the laws of Torah along with Kabbalah, I am trying to gain without giving anything back. Also, can one eat a SOYCHEESEBURGER?

Question on Avraham's meal already asked and answered above, my apologies. But is this further expounded upon in Gemorah? If so, where?
Thanks in advance and see you in Yerushalaim!!!

I don't remember where in my kabbalic studies I heard this story but was there an incident where Avraham sat with an angel and served both Milk and a Cow which he had "created". Why did this not violate torah law ?
I believe this is hidden in tractate chagiga but not sure ....

To strictly differentiate between the Torah law and Rabbinic Law is the Torah law to not cook the mothers milk of that specific calf. It was unclear to me from the Lecture what precisely the torah law is ?
Thanks, Love the lecture :)

The best way to learn is to take notes on these audio lectures, and organizing them, studying them and then teaching them to people close to you. When you will do that, you wont just know the information, you will also understand the information.
Thank you.

Thank you for your insights.
I now understand that the way to fix my world is to just eat it up!
Weird Al was RIGHT!

Until your teaching have happily ignored the rabbinical admonition against mixing meat and dairy. Now staying kosher will be a bit more difficult. You have convinced me that it is Torah. A thank you and shalom, Rabbi.

Dear Margie,
Thank you for your kind words, I'm glad you are learning. In response to your question: Read the verses carefully, Avraham avinu doesn't cook the milk and meat together (that would be a violation of the precept). Rather he serves people he thinks are Bedouins (Gentile's, although in reality they are angels and don't eat at all, see Rashi) who he know enjoy eating butter with their meat. Obviously they are under no such dietary obligation. What we learn from this, our Sages note, is how we must go out of our way to take care of strangers and extend the very best hospitality.
Hope that answers the question. Keep on asking and learning!

A very interisting study. I've learned so much, but I'm wondering about what it said in Gen. 18:8 When Avraham prepared a calf and milk and fed it to the three men. Can you explain that to me? Thanks and Shalom

Wow! Very good shi'ur! Apart from Rabbi Mendel Kaplan's ability and social skils to perform in a ''light'' humorous manner, his teachings were new to me and certainly an eye-opener! Have listened to it three times in a row! Thank you very much, Rabbi Mendel Kaplan! Shalom from Holland

Kabbalah On Cheeseburgers

Were they always Treif, or did the Torah originally only prohibit a Kid in its Mother's Milk? Was this forbidden mix banned over concerns for Health & Nutrition? This taste of Kabbalah will give you lots to chew on as you learn about this mitzvah's essential ingredients. | |
