The Mighty Mezuzah!

How does a mezuzah work? How can such a tiny device, with no electronic parts, protect an entire household of people wherever they are and whatever they are doing (certain high risk activities may be excluded)?

True, it's not the mezuzah that provides the protection, it's the Master of the Universe Himself (you can find His name written on the backside of every mezuzah: Shin Daled Yud). He says, "Put up a mezuzah on your doorway and I'll protect you when you're inside and out." But still, why a rolled up parchment device? And why on the doorway? And why any device at all—couldn't He just say, "Trust Me, and I'll take care of you"?

To answer this question, we have to first escape our nanobrain, subjective boxes and view matters from a cosmic perspective. The entire cosmos is His masterpiece of architecture. But He doesn't really live within it until there's a mezuzah on the door. The mezuzah is something like the artist's autograph, so that anyone looking will know who did this.

The problem is, a whole lot of critters in this universe don't want to recognize Who did this. They don't want to recognize that anyone did this at all. They just want to be left alone in the universe as though it were always here and they can do whatever they like with it. Those are the critters you gotta watch out from.

So we put up a mezuzah, effectively signing His autograph onto His masterpiece. It needs to be written by a scribe with an awe of heaven and care to the finest details of the Divine law—so that it corresponds in detail to the Grand Autograph Above. What is that Grand Autograph? The original words of thought by which you were conceived: The story of a being called Israel who loves G‑d with all its heart, speaks words of Torah wherever it goes and translates that Torah into mitzvahs. Every nuance of every letter in the mezuzah has something to do with your life down here.

It goes on the doorway, because doorways are the interface between one world and the next—which cosmically speaking would be the sefira of Malchut (Dominion), a.k.a. "The Shechina" which is all about His presence in this world. By doing so, our homes are transformed into scaled down versions of His own cosmic home (the universe). The world we live in becomes effectively a different kind of world—one in which those nasty critters don't belong. But you do.

For some heavy-duty Kabbalah on the mezuzah, see Doorways and Shady Characters - The Zohar.

Insurance Company Fools
I hate to be unkind to any person or organizations but AIG was among the cleaverest and most profit oriented untill their fall. And many other Insurance Companies paid cash for assets that could not be valued. A modest invesment in Mezuzas would have given better results.

Re: Thoughts...
Are you kidding? There's no way any insurance would adjust their policy according to the specs of your mezuzah! Religion is one thing, but a piece of parchment at the door?

Concerning kosher mezuzot: 30 years ago, 90% of mezuzot were not kosher. Today, that has changed dramatically. Nevertheless, you should still have them checked by a reliable mezuzah technician.

Re thoughts
Sorry, I can't buy that answer. If there was any evidence at all, the insurance companies would insist on them. They're not fools where profit is concerned. As to whether kosher or not, that would probably only create a minor glitch in any large survey result. After all, not all old mezuzas are "not kosher". I've met many reform Jews who insist that a non-kosher klaf makes no difference - only one view can be correct. Trouble is that each group considers itself to be the only one who can be correct. The anonymous answer makes "more sense" I'd agree with it but apparently the "party line" is not of that opinion.

... the higher power of the star shields
a big thanks, first, for this K-toon; & this platform of 'reminder' function(s)

just one question; as we begin to experience mezuzahs & understand sacred language,(the hebrew alphabet) ... & how HE does not fully live w/in one's house w/out this 'autograph'

i.e. ... until we properly equip our dwelling places (i.e. for the Shekinah Glory)?

with prayer; tefillin & tzitzit ...

but what representation(s) would a 'star-gazer' find in R. Infinity's (kosher) kabbalah lab?

the beautiful Star Shields of Abraham, David & Solomon are not just "with us" as ideas/favorite geometries for jewelry design/paintings are they? what real light energies can a star shield 'charge'?

and then, looking star(word), what do their (Divine) vectors look like?

yeah; i know this is a cartoon; but the mighty mezuzah does raise some difficult questions about kosher use of light energy in this world, doesn't it?

Re: Thoughts...
Not missing anything. The insurance companies are. They surveyed by religion, but not by kosher mezuzas.

It ain't about your house. The house does not know that it has a mezzuzah on its doors. These are reminders to you. the mezzuzah could be a reminder to you to scout out lower insurance, but the trick of the mezzuzah is to get you to think of something with a little more soul.
All the best.

Thoughts...
If the mezuzah does all this, why don't insurance companies provide a discount if they are all placed correctly and are kosher? Some years ago, one insurance company did run a statistical survey of house risks against the religion of the inhabitants. Results showed no difference in fire or theft risk. So, what am I missing?
