The Chazan - Cantor

Most prayers are led by a member of the congregation. It is considered an honor to lead the congregation in prayer. The congregation follows the leader for the duration of the prayer service.

In many congregations there is a specially designated cantor who leads the prayers on the Shabbat and holidays.
