Chapter 146

1. Hallelujah! My soul, praise the Lord.		א. הַלְלוּיָהּ הַלְלִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת יְהֹוָה:
2. I shall praise the Lord in my life; I shall sing to the Lord as long as I exist.		ב. אֲהַלְלָה יְהֹוָה בְּחַיָּי אֲזַמְּרָה לֵאלֹהַי בְּעוֹדִי:
as long as I exist: Heb. בעודי.
3. Do not trust in princes, in the son of men, who has no salvation.		ג. אַל תִּבְטְחוּ בִנְדִיבִים בְּבֶן אָדָם \| שֶׁאֵין לוֹ תְשׁוּעָה:
4. His spirit leaves, he returns to his soil; on that day, his thoughts are lost.		ד. תֵּצֵא רוּחוֹ יָשֻׁב לְאַדְמָתוֹ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא אָבְדוּ עֶשְׁתֹּנֹתָיו:
his thoughts: Heb. עשתונותיו his thoughts.
5. Praiseworthy is he in whose help is the God of Jacob; his hope is in the Lord his God.		ה. אַשְׁרֵי שֶׁאֵל יַעֲקֹב בְּעֶזְרוֹ שִׂבְרוֹ עַל יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהָיו:
Praiseworthy: is he in whose help is the God of Jacob, for the Holy One, blessed be He, promised him (Gen. 28: 15): “Behold I am with you, and I shall guard You, etc., and I shall return you.” Now why is He praiseworthy? Because He made heaven and earth and the sea, and since all is His, He has the power to guard him on the sea and on dry land; but a mortal king, although he watches him on dry land, cannot watch him on the sea.
6. Who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, Who keeps truth forever.		ו. עֹשֶׂה \| שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ אֶת הַיָּם וְאֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר בָּם הַשֹּׁמֵר אֱמֶת לְעוֹלָם:
Who keeps truth forever: To the end of many generations, He fulfills and keeps the truth of His promise.
7. Who performs justice for the oppressed, Who gives bread to the hungry; the Lord sets loose the bound.		ז. עֹשֶׂה מִשְׁפָּט \| לַעֲשׁוּקִים נֹתֵן לֶחֶם לָרְעֵבִים יְהֹוָה מַתִּיר אֲסוּרִים:
8. The Lord gives sight to the blind; the Lord straightens the bent; the Lord loves the righteous.		ח. יְהֹוָה \| פֹּקֵחַ עִוְרִים יְהֹוָה זֹקֵף כְּפוּפִים יְהֹוָה אֹהֵב צַדִּיקִים:
9. The Lord guards the strangers; He strengthens the orphan and the widow, and He perverts the way of the wicked.		ט. יְהֹוָה \| שֹׁמֵר אֶת גֵּרִים יָתוֹם וְאַלְמָנָה יְעוֹדֵד וְדֶרֶךְ רְשָׁעִים יְעַוֵּת:
strengthens: Heb. יעודד, an expression of strength.
10. The Lord will reign forever! Your God, O Zion, to all generations. Hallelujah!		י. יִמְלֹךְ יְהֹוָה \| לְעוֹלָם אֱלֹהַיִךְ צִיּוֹן לְדֹר וָדֹר הַלְלוּיָהּ:
The Lord will reign forever: He will perpetuate His kingdom with the redemption of His children.
