| 1. Hallelujah. Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness is forever. |
|
א. הַלְלוּיָהּ | הוֹדוּ לַיהֹוָה כִּי טוֹב כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ: |
| 2. Who can narrate the mighty deeds of the Lord? [Who] can make heard all His praise? |
|
ב. מִי יְמַלֵּל גְּבוּרוֹת יְהֹוָה יַשְׁמִיעַ כָּל תְּהִלָּתוֹ: |
| 3. Fortunate are those who keep justice, who perform righteousness at all times. |
|
ג. אַשְׁרֵי שֹׁמְרֵי מִשְׁפָּט עֹשֵׂה צְדָקָה בְכָל עֵת: |
| 4. Remember me, O Lord, when You favor Your people; be mindful of me with Your salvation. |
|
ד. זָכְרֵנִי יְהֹוָה בִּרְצוֹן עַמֶּךָ פָּקְדֵנִי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ: |
| when You favor Your people: When You show goodwill to Your people. |
|
|
| 5. To see the goodness of Your chosen ones, to rejoice with the joy of Your nation, to boast with Your inheritance. |
|
ה. לִרְאוֹת | בְּטוֹבַת בְּחִירֶיךָ לִשְׂמֹחַ בְּשִׂמְחַת גּוֹיֶךָ לְהִתְהַלֵּל עִם נַחֲלָתֶךָ: |
| 6. We sinned with our forefathers; we committed iniquity and wickedness. |
|
ו. חָטָאנוּ עִם אֲבוֹתֵינוּ הֶעֱוִינוּ הִרְשָׁעְנוּ: |
| 7. Our forefathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; they did not remember Your manifold deeds of kindness, and they were rebellious by the sea, by the Sea of Reeds. |
|
ז. אֲבוֹתֵינוּ בְמִצְרַיִם | לֹא הִשְׂכִּילוּ נִפְלְאוֹתֶיךָ לֹא זָכְרוּ אֶת רֹב חֲסָדֶיךָ וַיַּמְרוּ עַל יָם בְּיַם סוּף: |
| and they were rebellious by the sea: They had little faith; they said, “Just as we ascend from here, from this side, the Egyptians also are ascending from another side, and they will come after us,” until the Holy One, blessed be He, hinted to the sea, and it vomited them out onto the dry land. Then (Exod. 15:30) “Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.” Therefore (ibid. verse 31) “they believed in the Lord,” but in the beginning, they did not believe. I found this. |

| 8. And He saved them for His name's sake, to make known His might. |
|
ח. וַיּוֹשִׁיעֵם לְמַעַן שְׁמוֹ לְהוֹדִיעַ אֶת גְּבוּרָתוֹ: |
| 9. And He rebuked the Sea of Reeds, and it dried up, and He led them in the depths as [in] a desert. |
|
ט. וַיִּגְעַר בְּיַם סוּף וַיֶּחֱרָב וַיּוֹלִיכֵם בַּתְּהֹמוֹת כַּמִּדְבָּר: |
| and He led them in the depths in the desert: The Sea of Reeds was in the desert, for it is written (Exod. 14:13): “the desert has closed upon them, etc.” ; (Exod. 3: 18): “three days’ journey in the desert.” |

| 10. He saved them from the hand of the enemy, and He redeemed them from the hand of the foe. |
|
י. וַיּוֹשִׁיעֵם מִיַּד שׂוֹנֵא וַיִּגְאָלֵם מִיַּד אוֹיֵב: |
| 11. And the water covered their adversaries; not one of them survived. |
|
יא. וַיְכַסּוּ מַיִם צָרֵיהֶם אֶחָד מֵהֶם לֹא נוֹתָר: |
| 12. And they believed His words; they sang His praise. |
|
יב. וַיַּאֲמִינוּ בִדְבָרָיו יָשִׁירוּ תְּהִלָּתוֹ: |
| 13. Quickly, they forgot His deeds; they did not await His counsel. |
|
יג. מִהֲרוּ שָׁכְחוּ מַעֲשָׂיו לֹא חִכּוּ לַעֲצָתוֹ: |
| they did not await His counsel: They did not hope for Him. |
|
|
| 14. They craved a lust in the desert, and they tried God in the wasteland. |
|
יד. וַיִּתְאַוּוּ תַאֲוָה בַּמִּדְבָּר וַיְנַסּוּ אֵל בִּישִׁימוֹן: |
| They craved a lust: (Num. 11:4) “Who will give us meat to eat?” |
|
|
| 15. He gave them their request, but He sent emaciation into their soul. |
|
טו. וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם שֶׁאֱלָתָם וַיְשַׁלַּח רָזוֹן בְּנַפְשָׁם: |
| but He sent emaciation into their soul: (Num. 11:33) “and the Lord’s wrath was kindled against the people.” |
|
|
| 16. They angered Moses in the camp, Aaron, the holy man of the Lord. |
|
טז. וַיְקַנְאוּ לְמֹשֶׁה בַּמַּחֲנֶה לְאַהֲרֹן קְדוֹשׁ יְהֹוָה: |
| They angered Moses: Heb. ויקנאו. In the desert they angered him, like (Deut. 32:21): “They angered Me (קנאוני) with a no-god.” I found this. |
|
|
| 17. The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan and covered the congregation of Abiram. |
|
יז. תִּפְתַּח אֶרֶץ וַתִּבְלַע דָּתָן וַתְּכַס עַל עֲדַת אֲבִירָם: |
| The earth opened up, etc.: It appears that [the Psalmist] bestowed honor upon the sons of Korah [by refraining] from mentioning their father. He attributed the sin to Dathan and Abiram. |
|
|
| 18. And fire burned in their congregation; a flame burned the wicked. |
|
יח. וַתִּבְעַר אֵשׁ בַּעֲדָתָם לֶהָבָה תְּלַהֵט רְשָׁעִים: |
| And fire burned: (Num. 16: 35) “and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who burnt the incense. ” |
|
|
| 19. They made a calf in Horeb and prostrated themselves to a molten image. |
|
יט. יַעֲשׂוּ עֵגֶל בְּחֹרֵב וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ לְמַסֵּכָה: |
| 20. They exchanged their glory for the likeness of an ox eating grass. |
|
כ. וַיָּמִירוּ אֶת כְּבוֹדָם בְּתַבְנִית שׁוֹר אֹכֵל עֵשֶׂב: |
| eating grass: There is nothing as disgusting and repugnant as an ox. When it eats grass, it emits much dung, with which it sullies itself. Other books read: its saliva. |
|
|
| 21. They forgot God, their Savior, Who wrought great deeds in Egypt. |
|
כא. שָׁכְחוּ אֵל מוֹשִׁיעָם עֹשֶׂה גְדֹלוֹת בְּמִצְרָיִם: |
| 22. Wonders in the land of Ham, awesome deeds by the Sea of Reeds. |
|
כב. נִפְלָאוֹת בְּאֶרֶץ חָם נוֹרָאוֹת עַל יַם סוּף: |
| 23. He intended to destroy them [and would have] were it not that Moses, His chosen one, stood before Him in the breech to return His wrath from destroying. |
|
כג. וַיֹּאמֶר לְהַשְׁמִידָם לוּלֵי מֹשֶׁה בְחִירוֹ עָמַד בַּפֶּרֶץ לְפָנָיו לְהָשִׁיב חֲמָתוֹ מֵהַשְׁחִית: |
| 24. They rejected the desirable land; they did not believe His word. |
|
כד. וַיִּמְאֲסוּ בְּאֶרֶץ חֶמְדָּה לֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ לִדְבָרוֹ: |
| They rejected the desirable land: when the spies were sent out, and they brought calumny on the land (Num. 13:32). |
|
|
| 25. They complained in their tents; they did not hearken to the voice of the Lord. |
|
כה. וַיֵּרָגְנוּ בְאָהֳלֵיהֶם לֹא שָׁמְעוּ בְּקוֹל יְהֹוָה: |
| 26. He raised His hand to them to cast them down in the desert, |
|
כו. וַיִּשָּׂא יָדוֹ לָהֶם לְהַפִּיל אוֹתָם בַּמִּדְבָּר: |
| He raised His hand: with an oath. |
|
|
| 27. And to cast their seed among the nations and to scatter them in the lands. |
|
כז. וּלְהַפִּיל זַרְעָם בַּגּוֹיִם וּלְזָרוֹתָם בָּאֲרָצוֹת: |
| And to cast their seed among the nations: From that time, the destruction of the Temple was decreed upon them, for on the night of the ninth of Ab they went, and the Holy One, blessed be He, said, “They wept for nothing, and I shall establish for them weeping for generations.” |
|
|
| 28. They became attached to Baal Pe'or and ate sacrifices of the dead. |
|
כח. וַיִּצָּמְדוּ לְבַעַל פְּעוֹר וַיֹּאכְלוּ זִבְחֵי מֵתִים: |
| 29. They provoked [God] with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. |
|
כט. וַיַּכְעִיסוּ בְּמַעַלְלֵיהֶם וַתִּפְרָץ בָּם מַגֵּפָה: |
| 30. Phinehas stood up and executed justice, and the plague was stopped. |
|
ל. וַיַּעֲמֹד פִּינְחָס וַיְפַלֵּל וַתֵּעָצַר הַמַּגֵּפָה: |
| 31. It was accounted for him as a merit, for generation to generation to eternity. |
|
לא. וַתֵּחָשֶׁב לוֹ לִצְדָקָה לְדֹר וָדֹר עַד עוֹלָם: |
| 32. They provoked [God] by the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them. |
|
לב. וַיַּקְצִיפוּ עַל מֵי מְרִיבָה וַיֵּרַע לְמֹשֶׁה בַּעֲבוּרָם: |
| 33. For they rebelled against His spirit, and He uttered with His lips. |
|
לג. כִּי הִמְרוּ אֶת רוּחוֹ וַיְבַטֵּא בִּשְׂפָתָיו: |
| For they rebelled: Moses and Aaron. |
|
|
| against His spirit: with (Num. 20:10) “Hear now, you rebels!” |
|
|
| and He uttered with His lips: an oath (Num. 20: 12): “Therefore you shall not bring this community, etc.” |
|
|
| 34. They did not destroy the peoples whom the Lord had told them [to destroy]. |
|
לד. לֹא הִשְׁמִידוּ אֶת הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר אָמַר יְהֹוָה לָהֶם: |
| They did not destroy: in the days of Joshua. |
|
|
| the peoples whom the Lord had told them: (Deut. 20:16): “You shall not allow a soul to remain alive” ; (Exod. 23:33), “They shall not remain as residents in your land,” but they allowed them to dwell in their midst, paying tribute. |
|
|
| 35. And they mingled with the nations and learned their deeds. |
|
לה. וַיִּתְעָרְבוּ בַגּוֹיִם וַיִּלְמְדוּ מַעֲשֵׂיהֶם: |
| 36. They worshipped their idols, which became a snare for them. |
|
לו. וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת עֲצַבֵּיהֶם וַיִּהְיוּ לָהֶם לְמוֹקֵשׁ: |
| 37. They slaughtered their sons and daughters to the demons. |
|
לז. וַיִּזְבְּחוּ אֶת בְּנֵיהֶם וְאֶת בְּנוֹתֵיהֶם לַשֵּׁדִים: |
| 38. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters whom they slaughtered to the idols of Canaan, and the land became polluted with the blood. |
|
לח. וַיִּשְׁפְּכוּ דָם נָקִי דַּם בְּנֵיהֶם וּבְנוֹתֵיהֶם אֲשֶׁר זִבְּחוּ לַעֲצַבֵּי כְנָעַן וַתֶּחֱנַף הָאָרֶץ בַּדָּמִים: |
| 39. And they became unclean through their deeds, and they went astray with their acts. |
|
לט. וַיִּטְמְאוּ בְמַעֲשֵׂיהֶם וַיִּזְנוּ בְּמַעַלְלֵיהֶם: |
| 40. And the Lord's wrath was kindled against His people and He detested His inheritance. |
|
מ. וַיִּחַר אַף יְהֹוָה בְּעַמּוֹ וַיְתָעֵב אֶת נַחֲלָתוֹ: |
| 41. And He delivered them into the hands of nations, and their enemies ruled over them. |
|
מא. וַיִּתְּנֵם בְּיַד גּוֹיִם וַיִּמְשְׁלוּ בָהֶם שׂנְאֵיהֶם: |
| And He delivered them into the hands of nations: in the days of the Judges between one judge and another, e.g. Eglon, Cushan-rishathaim, Sisera, the Philistines, and Midian. (I found.) |
|
|
| 42. And their foes oppressed them, and they were humbled under their hand. |
|
מב. וַיִּלְחָצוּם אוֹיְבֵיהֶם וַיִּכָּנְעוּ תַּחַת יָדָם: |
| 43. Many times He saved them, but they were rebellious with their counsel, and they were humbled because of their iniquity. |
|
מג. פְּעָמִים רַבּוֹת יַצִּילֵם וְהֵמָּה יַמְרוּ בַעֲצָתָם וַיָּמֹכּוּ בַּעֲוֹנָם: |
| Many times He saved them: Many times they provoked Him; yet He was slow to anger and saved them. |
|
|
| and they were humbled because of their iniquity: Heb. וימכו, and they were humbled because of their iniquity. |
|
|
| 44. But He looked upon their distress when He heard their cries. |
|
מד. וַיַּרְא בַּצַּר לָהֶם בְּשָׁמְעוֹ אֶת רִנָּתָם: |
| But He looked upon their distress: On account of prayer. |
|
|
| when He heard their cries: On account of the merit of the Patriarchs. |
|
|
| 45. And He remembered His covenant for them, and He relented in accordance with His abundant kindness. |
|
מה. וַיִּזְכֹּר לָהֶם בְּרִיתוֹ וַיִּנָּחֵם כְּרֹב חֲסָדָיו: |
| And He remembered His covenant: On account of repentance. |
|
|
| and He relented in accordance with His abundant kindness: On account of the end, when He heard, “Save us, etc.” Moses, too, included them in one verse (Deut. 4:30): “In this distress that will befall you etc.” |
|
|
| 46. And He caused them to be pitied by all their captors. |
|
מו. וַיִּתֵּן אוֹתָם לְרַחֲמִים לִפְנֵי כָּל שׁוֹבֵיהֶם: |
| 47. Save us, O Lord, our God, and gather us from the nations, to give thanks to Your holy name, to boast with Your praise. |
|
מז. הוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ | יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וְקַבְּצֵנוּ מִן הַגּוֹיִם לְהֹדוֹת לְשֵׁם קָדְשֶׁךָ לְהִשְׁתַּבֵּחַ בִּתְהִלָּתֶךָ: |
| save us: now also, O Lord, our God. |
|
|
| 48. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from world to world, and all the people shall say, "Amen." Hallelujah! |
|
מח. בָּרוּךְ יְהֹוָה | אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן הָעוֹלָם | וְעַד הָעוֹלָם וְאָמַר כָּל הָעָם אָמֵן הַלְלוּיָהּ: |
| from world to world: From this world to the world to come. |
