Chapter 101

1. Of David, a song. I shall sing of kindness and judgment; to You, O Lord, I shall sing.		א. לְדָוִד מִזְמוֹר חֶסֶד וּמִשְׁפָּט אָשִׁירָה לְךָ יְהֹוָה אֲזַמֵּרָה:
I shall sing of kindness and judgment: when You bestow kindness upon me, I will praise you [with the blessing:] “Blessed be He Who is good and does good,” and when You perform judgment upon me, I will sing, “Blessed be the true Judge.” In either case, to You, O Lord, I shall sing.
2. I shall concern myself with the way of integrity. When will it come to me? I shall walk with the innocence of my heart within my house.		ב. אַשְׂכִּילָה \| בְּדֶרֶךְ תָּמִים מָתַי תָּבוֹא אֵלָי אֶתְהַלֵּךְ בְּתָם לְבָבִי בְּקֶרֶב בֵּיתִי:
I shall concern myself: I shall direct my thoughts to the way of integrity.
When will it come to me: The straight path, to walk upon it, and I shall walk with the integrity of my heart even within my house, in private as well as in public.
3. I do not place before my eyes any base thing; I hate doing wayward deeds; it does not cling to me.		ג. לֹא אָשִׁית \| לְנֶגֶד עֵינַי דְּבַר בְּלִיָּעַל עֲשֹׂה סֵטִים שָׂנֵאתִי לֹא יִדְבַּק בִּי:
wayward: Heb. סטים, an expression of (Num. 5:12): “whose wife strays (תשטה) from the right path,” to turn away from the road, destolemant in Old French, to swerve.
4. A perverse heart turns away from me; I know no evil.		ד. לֵבָב עִקֵּשׁ יָסוּר מִמֶּנִּי רָע לֹא אֵדָע:
I know no evil: I love no [evil] (Another explanation: [Shem Ephraim]) I recognize no evil thing.
5. He who slanders his neighbor in secret, I cut him down; one whose eyes are raised up high and his heart is expansive, I cannot tolerate him.		ה. מְלָשְׁנִי בַסֵּתֶר \| רֵעֵהוּ אוֹתוֹ אַצְמִית גְּבַהּ עֵינַיִם וּרְחַב לֵבָב אוֹתוֹ לֹא אוּכָל:
I cannot tolerate him: that he should be my friend, lest I learn from his deeds.
6. My eyes are upon the faithful of the land to dwell with me; he who goes on the way of the innocent, he will serve me.		ו. עֵינַי \| בְּנֶאֶמְנֵי אֶרֶץ לָשֶׁבֶת עִמָּדִי הֹלֵךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ תָּמִים הוּא יְשָׁרְתֵנִי:
7. He will not dwell within my house; he who practices deceit, who speaks lies, will not be established before my eyes.		ז. לֹא יֵשֵׁב \| בְּקֶרֶב בֵּיתִי עֹשֵׂה רְמִיָּה דֹּבֵר שְׁקָרִים לֹא יִכּוֹן לְנֶגֶד עֵינָי:
8. Betimes I cut down all the wicked of the earth; to cut down from the city of the Lord all workers of violence.		ח. לַבְּקָרִים אַצְמִית כָּל רִשְׁעֵי אָרֶץ לְהַכְרִית מֵעִיר יְהֹוָה כָּל פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן:
Betimes I cut down: Every day, I cut down the wicked of Israel little by little, those who are condemned to death.
