Chapter 4

1And King Solomon was king over all Israel.
Was king over all Israel: For when they saw his wisdom they all rejoiced in his kingdom.
2And these (were) the princes whom he had, Azariahu the son of Zadok the priest.
3Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha, scribes, Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud the recorder.
Scribes: to write the chronicles of the king.
the recorder: [His duty was to remind the king] which judgment came before him first, that he might decide it first. So I heard.
4And Benaiahu the son of Jehoiada (was) over the host, and Zadok and Abiathar (were) the priests.
5And Azariahu the son of Nathan (was) over the officers, and Zabud the son of Nathan (was) principal officer, and the king's friend.
Was over the officers: He had twelve officers to supply the food of the king and his household.
6And Ahishar (was) over the household, and Adoniram the son of Abda (was) over the levy.
Was over the levy: which Solomon had raised on the Israelites, as it is said, “And king Solomon raised a levy” (below 5:27).
7And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, who provided victuals for the king and his household, each man had to make provision for a month in the year.
Who provided victuals for the king: all his meals, and the food of the numerous horses and all the needs of his expenditures.
8And these are their names, the son of Hur, on Mount Ephraim.
9The son of Deker, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan.
10The son of Hesed, in Aruboth, to him (pertained) Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher.
11The son of Abinadav, all the region of Dor; Tapath the daughter of Solomon was to him as a wife.
The region of Dor: Heb. נפתדאר, the region of Dor.
12Baana the son of Ahilud, (to him pertained) Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethana beneath Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-mechola, as far as beyond Jokmeam.
13The son of Geber, in Ramoth-gilead, to him (pertained) the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him (also pertained) the region of Argob which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and brazen bars.
The region of Argob: He was appointed over them to collect the levy of the king, because the rules of the monarchy dictate that his expenditures should be collected from the people, as it is said in the rules of the monarchy in the book of Samuel I (8:11).
14Ahinadav the son of Iddo, (was appointed) to Mahanaim.
15Achimaaz (was) in Naphtali, also he took Basemath the daughter of Solomon as a wife.
16Baana the son of Hushai (was) in Asher and in Aloth.
17Jehoshaphat the son of Paruach (was) in Issachar.
18Shimei the son of Elah, (was) in Benjamin.
19Geber the son of Uri (was) in the country of Gilead, (in) the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan, and one officer that was (over all the officers) in the land.
And one officer that was in the land: There is a difference of opinion between Rav and Shmuel. One says, [He was the] one who was appointed over all of them. This was Azariahu the son of Nathan, who was mentioned previously in verse 5, and one says, [To provide the victuals of the king] for the thirteenth month of a Jewish leap year.
20Judah and Israel (were) many, as the sand which (is) by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and rejoicing.
