Chapter 18

1And the entire congregation of the children of Israel assembled at Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there. And the land was subdued before them.
and set up the tent of meeting there: which they had constructed in the wilderness. There was no ceiling, but a stone structure below, and curtains above. This we learned in Tract. Zeb. .
And the land was subdued before them: since the Tabernacle was permanently established, the Land became much easier for them to conquer.
2And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, who had not yet received their inheritance.
seven tribes: for Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh had already received their inheritance in the days of Moses on the other side of the Jordan; and in the land of Canaan, the lot had already fallen for Judah, and Ephraim, and for the other half tribe of Manasseh. Thus, five tribes were provided for.
3And Joshua said, "How long are you slack to come in to possess the land, which the Lord God of your forefathers has given you?
slack: Heb.
4Appoint for yourselves three men for each tribe; and I will send them, and they shall arise, and go through the land, and describe it according to their inheritance; and they shall come to me.
for each tribe: I.e., for each tribe of the seven.
according to their inheritance: into seven parts, not equal ones, but in proportion to the size of the tribes, to the larger tribe according to its largeness, and to the smaller tribe according to its smallness, as is stated: “To the larger, you shall give a larger inheritance, etc.”
5And they shall divide it into seven parts; Judah shall remain in his border on the south, and the house of Joseph shall remain in their border on the north.
and they shall divide it into seven parts: both that which has already been conquered, and that which is yet to be conquered.
Judah shall remain in his border on the south: of Eretz Israel, for there fell to his lot the entire southern boundary.
and the house of Joseph… on the north: I.e., the north of the already conquered land. There is, however, much more to conquer: The side of the boundary from Baal-gad to the coming to Hamath, which is near Mount Hor, in the northern boundary, and the seven tribes shall divide that which is between Judah and Joseph, and also that which is yet to be conquered.
6You shall describe the land into seven parts, and bring it here to me, and I will cast lots for you here before the Lord our God.
and I will cast: Heb. וְיָרִיתִי, and I will cast [or throw], like: “He cast into the sea.”
7For the Levites have no part among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance; and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have taken their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them."
8And the men arose, and went; and Joshua charged those that went to describe the land, saying, "Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and return to me, and I will cast lots for you here before the Lord in Shiloh."
9And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and they came to Joshua to the camp at Shiloh.
10And Joshua cast lots for Shiloh before the Lord; and there Joshua divided the land to the children of Israel according to their divisions.
11And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families; and the border of their lot went out between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
12And their border on the north side was from the Jordan; and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill westward; and its goings out were to the wilderness of Beth-aven.
And their border on the north side was from the Jordan: and their northern border was the Jordan, for the border started at the east, and went up to the side of Jericho on the north, i.e., it went up from there westward to the side of Jericho, and the line is drawn on the north of Jericho. Hence, Jericho is within the line, in Benjamin’s part.
to the wilderness of Beth-aven: Heb.
13And the border went over from there to Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Beth-el, southward; and the border descended to 'Atroth-adar, on the hill that lies on the south side of lower Beth-horon.
went over from there: westward.
to Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Beth-el, southward: the city which Jacob called Beth-el. This is not the city of Beth-el which is near Ai, for the Scripture states regarding the border of Joseph: “And it went out from Beth el to Luz.” Hence, we deduce that there were two. Now, Luz was not in Benjamin’s territory, for the borderline was on the inner side of Luz, as the Scripture states “to the side of Luz… southward.” The line goes south of Luz; hence, Luz is outside of the line, in the inheritance of the children of Joseph, while Beth-el is in the territory of Benjamin, as is stated below in this chapter.
14And the border was circled, and encompassed the west side southward, from the hill that lies before Beth-horon southward; and its goings out were at Kirjath-baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah; this was the west side.
And the border was circled, and encompassed the west side southward: in 'Atroth adar, the length of the northern boundary from east to west, ends; and from there, the line encompassed the western border of Benjamin to go southward, i.e., from north to south. The western borderline extended from the hill that lies before Beth horon, southward, i.e., from the hill which lies south of Beth-horon, from there began the northwest corner of Benjamin, and the borderline went from north to south.
and its goings out were: i.e., his south-western corner, was at Kirjath-jearim which belonged to Judah. Hence, the width of Benjamin’s boundary occupies the entire width of the land between Judah and Ephraim. His southern border coincides with Judah’s northern border, where Jerusalem was situated, as it is stated further in this chapter; therefore, both tribes had a share in it. Benjamin’s northern border coincides with Ephraim’s southern border, and there was Shiloh in Ephraim’s territory, as it is said: “And He despised the tent of Joseph, and the tribe of Ephraim He did not choose.” Benjamin too, had a share in it, as we learned in Tractate Zeb. : In three places did the Divine Presence rest in Israel: In Shiloh, and Nob [and Gibeon, counted with Nob as one place], and the Temple, and in all of them, it rested only in the part belonging to Benjamin.
this was the west side: the west side from Atroth-adar to Kirjath-jearim
15And the south side was from the end of Kirjath-jearim, and the border went out to a sea, and went out to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah.
And the south side: and the southern boundary of Benjamin which is identical with the northern boundary of Judah. All the borders enumerated here, have been enumerated in reference to the north of Judah, and every place which is described here as going down, is described in reference to Judah as going up, because here he counts from west to east, and there he counts from east to west.
and the border went out to a sea: Heb. יָמָּה, to a sea, and I do not know which sea this is.
16And the border went down to the end of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants (Rephaim) on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Jebusite on the south, and descended to 'En-rogel.
17And it circled from the north, and went out to 'En-shemesh, and went out to Geliloth, which is over against the ascent of Adumim, and descended to Eben of Bohan the son of Reuben.
18And it passed along to the side over against the 'Arabah northward, and it went down to the 'Arabah.
19And the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah northward; and the outgoings of the border were at the bay of the Salt Sea to the north, at the south end of the Jordan; this was the south border.
at the bay of the Salt Sea to the north: to the north of the bay. Hence the entire bay is in Judah’s territory.
at the… end of the Jordan: the place where the Jordan empties into the Dead Sea. This was described as the north-eastern corner of Judah, and here the Scripture describes it as the south-eastern corner of Benjamin.
20And the Jordan borders it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by its borders round about, according to their families.
And the Jordan borders it on the east side: i.e., the Jordan was the eastern boundary of Benjamin, for the Jordan runs opposite the width of his entire boundary on the east.
21And the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families, were; Jericho, and Beth-hoglah, and the Valley of Keziz.
22And Beth-arabah, and Zemaraim, and Beth-el.
23And 'Avim, and Parah, and 'Ophrah.
24And Cephar-haamonah, and 'Ophni, and Geba; twelve cities with their villages.

26And Mizpeh, and Chephirah, and Mozah.
27And Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah.
28And Zelah, Eleph, and the Jebusite, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
And Zelah, Eleph, and the Jebusite, which is Jerusalem: Each one is a separate city, and so are Gilbeath and Kiriath, totaling five cities in this verse.
