Chapter 15

1And the lot for the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families, was to the border of Edom, to the wilderness of Zin southward at the uttermost part of the south.
to the border of Edom: Adjacent to the border of Edom.
southward: at the southern boundary of Eretz Israel.
at the uttermost part of the south: at the end of the entire boundary.
2And their south border was from the edge of the salt sea, from the bay that faces southward.
And their south border was: i.e., the southern border of Judah.
from the edge of the Salt Sea: that is the southeastern corner of Eretz Israel, in אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי.
the bay: [lit., the tongue, i.e., the tongue] of the sea.
3And it went out to the south side of Maaleh-Acrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended on the south side of Kadesh-barnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to Adar, and circled to Karkaa.
And it went out to the south side of Maaleh-Acrabbim [Scorpion Pass]: The Scripture uses the terms: וְיָצָא and it went out, וְתָאַר, and it circled וְנָסַב, and it circled, only where the line of the boundary bulges outward, or is indented, and does not follow a straight course. Here, it bulges outward, and comes מִנֶּגֶב לְמַעֲלֵה עַקְרַבּים to the south of Maaleh-Acrabim. Hence, Maaleh-Acrabbim is within the line, and it passed it and continued westward.
to Zin: Heb. צִנָּה, same as לְצִין, Every word which needs a ‘lamed’ prefixed to it, may instead have a ‘he’ suffixed to it.
and ascended: As long as it ascends from the east toward Jerusalem, it ascends, and from Jerusalem and further, it descends. Hence, we learn that Jerusalem is the highest point in all Eretz Israel. Jerusalem is not mentioned in this boundary, for it was in the northern border of Judah, as is mentioned in this chapter.
and ascended on the south side of Kadesh-Barnea: The line goes to the south of Kadesh-Barnea. Hence, Kadesh is within the line.
and it passed along to Hezron: He continues to count westward until: and its goings out (sic) were at the sea.
4From there it passed toward Azmon, and went to the river of Egypt; and the goings out of the boundary were at the sea. This shall be your southern boundary.
the goings out: the end of the border is at the Great [Mediterranean] Sea which is the western border of all Eretz Israel. Hence, the boundary of Judah occupies the entire length of Eretz Israel from east to west, and is situated in the south of Eretz Israel.
5And the east border was the Salt Sea, even to the end of the Jordan. And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of the Jordan.
and the east border: the line which is drawn along the east border of Judah.
the Salt Sea: which is the southeastern corner of the land, in “Eileh Massei.”
even to the end of the Jordan: The breadth of the boundary of Judah is only opposite the Dead Sea, up to the place where the Jordan empties into the Dead Sea, for the Jordan too is in the eastern border of the land of Canaan, as it is stated in “Eileh Mass’ei,” concerning the eastern border; and the border descended to the Jordan, and its goings out were the Salt Sea, which is at the corner.
And their border in the north quarter: The borderline which is drawn along the northern border from east to west, is from the gulf of the Dead Sea, from the place where the Jordan empties into it, as we have stated that the eastern border ends there; and it went up westward to Beth Hoglah, and the line passed on the north of Beth-Arabah in the south of Eretz Israel. Beth-Arabah (sic) hence, Beth Arabah is in the boundary of Judah, within the line.
6And the border went up to Beth-hoglah, and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah; and the border went up to Eben of Bohan the son of Reuben.
and the border went up to Eben of Bohan: As long as the border goes toward Jerusalem, it goes up.
7And the border went up toward Debir from the Valley of Achor, and so northward, facing Gilgal, that is before the ascent to Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley, and the border passed toward the waters of Enshemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel.
And the border went up toward Debir from the Valley of Achor: for the Valley of Achor was between Eben of Bohan and Debir.
and so northward, facing Gilgal: And when the border reached opposite Gilgal, the border widens and the borderline goes out toward the north to Gilgal which is opposite the ascent to Adummim, the ascent being south of the valley. Hence, the valley is outside the line, not in the boundary of Judah.
on the south side of the valley: This was a steep canyon without water.
at 'En-rogel: the fountain of the launderers, according to Jonathan who renders: קַצְרָה עֵין. The scripture calls the launderer רוֹגֵל, because he treads woolen clothing with his feet (רֶגֶל).
8And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom to the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem; and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward.
And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom: It still goes up a little until 'En-’etam, and from there on it goes down. Now, this is what our Rabbis said in Zeb. : “They thought to build it [the Temple] in 'En-’etam, which is slightly higher than Jerusalem.”
to the south side of the Jebusite: the same is Jerusalem: Jerusalem is found to be outside the line, and not in the boundary of Judah, but in the boundary of Benjamin, which is north of Judah.
9And the border circled from the top of the mountain to the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of Mount Ephron; and the border circled to Baalah, which is Kirjath-jearim.
And circled: Heb. וְתָאַר an expression similar to וְנָסַב, in a circle, like: “And with a compass he encircles it.” יְתָאֳרֵהוּ Jonathan rendered them all וְיִסְחַר, and he encircled.
and it went out to, etc.: The line goes out to the north, and the boundary widens to the cities of Mount Ephron.
and the border circled to Baalah: This is not to the west, but the bulge was to the north.
10And the border compassed from Baalah westward to Mount Seir, and passed along to the side of Mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north side, and went down to Beth-Shemesh, and passed on to Timnah.
And the border compassed from Baalah westward: Now he returns to his previous enumeration [of border cities] from east to west.
to the side of Mount Jearim, etc.: for the borderline was north of Mt. Jearim. Hence, Mt. Jearim is within the boundary of Judah, within the borderline.
11And the border went out to the side of Ekron northward; and the border circled to Shicron, and passed along to Mount Baalah, and went out to Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.
and the goings out of the border: the end of the boundary.
at the sea: at the Great [Med.] Sea which is the western boundary.
12And the west border was to the Great Sea, and the coast thereof, this is the border of the children of Judah round about, according to their families.
13And to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of the giants, which is Hebron.
according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua: as the Most Holy, Blessed be He, said to Joshua.
14And Caleb drove out of there the three sons of the giant: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of the giant.
And Caleb drove out of there: after Joshua’s death, for during Joshua’s lifetime Hebron was not yet taken, as it is stated in Jud. It was only written here because of its relation to the division [of the land].
15And he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir; and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
Kirjath-sepher: Our Rabbis said: These are the [3,000] laws which were forgotten during the mourning period for Moses, which Othniel the son of Kenaz reestablished through his great scholarship.
16And Caleb said, "He who smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter for a wife."
17And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife.
the brother of Caleb: from his mother.
18And it came to pass, as she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask of her father a field; and she leaned off the donkey; and Caleb said to her, "What is wanting to you?"
and she leaned: Heb. (Targum) She bent herself to fall at his feet.
19And she said, "Give me sustenance, for you have given me an arid land; give me also springs of water." And he gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
sustenance: Heb.
an arid land: Heb. נֶגֶב, like: “the face of the ground was dried,” which Onkelos renders: נגיבו. Sec in French. I.e., a house which is arid [devoid] of all earthly good, a man who has nothing but Torah.
you have given me: Heb. נתתני, i.e., you have given to me [but the preposition is lacking in Hebrew]. Like: “To speak to him (דַּבְּרוֹ) peacefully,”;“my children have gone forth from me (יְצָאֻנִי)”; “he cooked for them (וּבִשְּׁלָם) the meat.”
20This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.
21And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the border of Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur.
And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah: on the border of the tribe of Judah. That is what our Rabbis said: Joshua only enumerated the towns on the borders [of every tribe].
22And Kinah, and Dimonah, and Adadah.

all the cities are twenty-nine: When you count them, you find thirty-eight. These extra were taken by the children of Simeon from the territory of the children of Judah, and they are mentioned in the inheritance of Simeon: Beer-sheba, and Moladah, and Hazar-shual, and Ezem, and Eltolad, and Hormah, and Ziklag, and Ain, and Rimmon. These are the extra nine enumerated here.

fourteen cities: When you count them, you find fifteen. I say that Tappuah and Enam are one, and this is its explanation: Tappuah and its spring. That is 'En-tappuah which is mentioned in reference to the inheritance of Manasseh: 'to the inhabitants of ‘En-tappuah.’

63As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwelt with the children of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.
the children of Judah could not drive them out: We learned in Sifrei : Rabbi Joshua the son of Korha says: They really could, but they were not permitted, because of the oath which Abraham had sworn to Abimelech. Now these Jebusites were not of the Jebusite nation, but the Tower of David which was in Jerusalem, was called Jebus, and the inhabitants of that section were of the Philistines. And when the children of Judah conquered Jerusalem, they did not drive out the inhabitants of that section.
