Circumcision in a Minute

The Eternal Covenant

The Jew is bound with a covenant engraved deep beneath his conscious self, even on his very flesh: a timeless bond G‑d established with his father Abraham. Long before he could be self-aware, his mother and father brought him into this covenant through circumcision.

When?

The brit (covenant of circumcision) must be performed by an expert, Torah-observant mohel. Several days after birth, the mohel inspects the infant’s state of health. If all is well, the brit must be performed on the eighth day of the boy’s life, anytime during daytime hours—the earlier the better. Otherwise, the brit must be postponed.

  • Long before he could be self-aware, his parents bring him into the covenantRemember, the Jewish date begins and ends at nightfall. Consult with a rabbi if the child was born between sunset and dark.
  • The brit is held even on a Shabbat, holiday or fast day. This is not the case, however, or if the brit was postponed, or if the child was born via C-section.
  • Missed out? It’s never too late. There are mohels specially trained to circumcise adults (anesthetics included).

The Ceremony

A brit is a joyous event. The custom is not to invite people, but to notify them of the time and place. The infant is brought in and placed on a designated “Seat of Elijah the Prophet”—who, according to tradition, attends every brit.

The mohel recites the blessing and performs the circumcision on the baby, who lies in the lap of the sandak (considered a prestigious honor). The father then recites his own blessing, thanking G‑d for this special mitzvah. A prayer is recited introducing the boy’s Jewish name.

And then, in fine Jewish tradition, we eat.

We left out:

  • On the Friday night after the boy's birth, a special celebration, a shalom zachar, is held.
  • The father traditionally remains awake the night prior to the brit, studying Torah and reciting selected passages of the Zohar.
  • In recent times, medical science has proven circumcision to be a highly effective measure against many diseases.

not addressing this year old topic after this.

first of all, i said, 'RELYING ON INTERNET ALONE IS INSUFFICIENT!" Second of all, I encourage you to visit the local Chabad houses in your area as I know for a 100% FACT that there are Chabad rabbis there. Third, it seems you are indeed racist against white people from your comments. As Jews, we are taught acceptance of all G-d's creations, no matter race, creed, religion, all walks of life are EQUAL in G-d's eyes!

Lastly, on this topic, as with many others, you can find arguments for and against each side. While I'm not 77 years old, I do much more research than you could imagine being a student, so calling someone a "baby" is indeed childlike in itself and defeats the purpose of any intelligent conversation. This site and conversation itself is to discuss and exchange ideas, not waste time, as the Torah itself says that men should not waste words and curse each other, but should discuss and learn!

circumcision
Dear Ben--- please allow me to continue my mail. Your out burst that "internet is false, untustworthy, misleading and misinformed" defeats the purpose of Chabad site. Do you confirm that whatever Chabad says on their site is all false and untrustworthy?. If such is the case please request them to close down the site as they are spreading all lies according to you. Whatever I learnt about Judaism, the credit goes to Chabad site. But I am shocked one person of their faith is negating all the precious work done by Chabad. Come to India, plese be my guest, I will take you world famous surgeons, religious authorities and white skinned foreigners who are doctors, engineers, social scientists and any eminent persons you choose and calarify your obstinate opinion. This may possibly change your obstinate vision which is of a very narrow pipe. I am 77 year old, so it will take 55 years for you to get worty vision like mine. Please work towards that otherwise Jews would be extinct by that time.

circumcision
Dear Ben---Thank you for your enlightenment on the subject. I had posted the comment on July 11 2009. Firstly your comments are generalised and limited to your own experience, this is only one case! You are a baby in research. It is easy to say internet is false. Do you know that internet is used in a massive way to use for references by thousands of scientists. in all the fields of science. You are an American please go to the library of you university and ask research scientists there about the internet use in research. Go to the sites of renouned American doctors and hospitals how many babies undergo circumcision. In Europe very few babies are circumcised. Ask those Europeon Doctors about the benefits and hazards of circumcision. Do the research with Asian hospitals and find out WHY babies are not circumcised in those countries. Dear Ben your outburst defeats your own expression that "internet information is false, untrustworthy, misleading and misinformed opinions" is false.

response to the above mentioned
all hospitals circumcise due to the health BENEFIITS! whatever research you obtained is indeed false, ask local physicians on their opionion. relying on the internet alone is an untrustworthy source of often misleading and misinformed opinions labeled and posted for consumption as "information".

myself being circumcised and witnessing two, I guarantee that their is little to no blood, the pain is for a mere 2 seconds or so, and there are no health risks. I'm a healthy 22 year old that has had no problems due to circumcision and i suggest you speak to a rabbi and physician about your research.

circumcision
I am a Non Jew, Non Christian and Non Islamic. But I have friends from all the above mentioned faiths. We never came close to discuss our faiths. I am from a faith where circumcision is not an order, not practiced and never done. I have full regards for the Jewish practice. Allow me to mention here that I SEARCHED on internet and found that there are hundreds of pages in the internet which do not recomend circumcision. It is extremely painful to the baby, there is lot of blood. The baby can become adult with foreskin and do all the things which a cicumcised man can do. Why a God-given body should be mutilated? Also the research has shown that delicate and very sensitive nerves are spread and end in the foreskin which enhances sex enjoyment. I again say that I tender full apologies for mentioning my opinion.
