Shedding the Masks

Masks, costumes, hats… all disguises that allow us to try on identities. One of the most liberating aspects of Purim is the fun in dressing up, accessing our true selves, and then no longer needing the costumes. So many of us have struggled through life pretending to be someone we are not. Some of us have not known that we don’t even know who we are. Recovery involves shedding the mask, sometimes layers and layers of masks. Purim allows us to play out this process with festivities, friends, and fun. At the end of the day, we pack the costumes away, but with G-d’s help, we have come closer to touching our own pure souls.
