How Do I Explain Israel's Actions in Gaza?

Question:

I am the only Jew in my office, so I face a daily barrage of questions about Israel's actions in Gaza. I don't know who appointed me as Israel's spokesman and I am not armed with the answers. Can you help?

Answer:

At times like this, each one of us becomes an ambassador for Israel. Even if you don't agree with everything Israel does, any decent person must stand up for Israel's right to self-defense.

We can leave the military and political issues to the experts, but we should all be clear on the moral questions raised by this war. Let's look at a few of the most commonly asked questions.

Q: How can Israel justify killing civilians if their intent is to crush Hamas?

A: The death of innocents is a tragic inevitability of war. Our hearts go out to all those caught in the middle. The sad fact is that the Palestinian people are being held hostage by Hamas. Just as it is clear that Hamas is morally culpable for any harm done to Gilad Shalit, the Israeli hostage that they hold, so too are they culpable for the fate of Palestinian innocents amongst whom they hide. A civilian who is killed while being used by a terrorist as a human shield is a victim of the terrorist, not the Israeli army, who does not target innocent civilians.

Q: Isn't Israel's response a bit disproportionate?

A: If Israel's purpose was to take revenge, then perhaps the question of "proportion" would apply here. But Israel is waging a defensive war. In war, you don't measure your response to the enemy by what they have done to you in the past, but rather by what needs to be done to stop them from attacking you. Israel must destroy Hamas' capability to continue shooting rockets at Israeli cities. Israel's actions are proportionate to the present and future threat, not just the damage done in the past.

Q: Doesn't Israel understand that they are just creating more terrorists? The anger and fury at Israel as a result of bombing Gaza will only make more people want to join Hamas.

A: Feelings of frustration, anger, fear and rage do not make you into a terrorist. A culture of death and an education of hate does. Israel doesn't need to do anything to create terrorists - Islamic extremism does that - but Israel must act to destroy those who threaten its people.

Q: Hamas indeed has a militant wing, but it also does a lot of good. They are responsible for social programs, educational projects and humanitarian work in Gaza. By destroying Hamas, Israel also destroys all the good they do. Aren't we demonizing a group that is not all bad?

A: If a serial killer also happens to volunteer for his local hospital, has donated money to an orphanage, and looks after his ailing grandmother, he is still a serial killer, and he and the threat he represents must be treated as such. The danger he poses far outweighs the concern for any good he may do.

Q: By using violence, how is Israel any better than its terrorist enemies?

A: That is as ridiculous as saying that a woman who fights off an attacker is no better than her attacker. Israel would not touch Hamas if Hamas would stop sending rockets and suicide bombers into Israel. Israel seeks to live in peace with its neighbors; Hamas and its allies seek to destroy Israel, no matter what Israel does.

There is a world of difference between the Hamas terrorists and the Israeli soldiers. The Hamas terrorist seeks violence as a way of life; his aim is to sow war and death. For the Israeli soldier, war is a necessity, and a moral duty, because Israel's citizens are being attacked and innocent lives are being threatened. The Hamas terrorist seeks to maximize civilian casualties; the Israeli soldier does everything in his power to minimize them.

The Hamas terrorist fears times of peace, because then he has no purpose. The Israeli soldier dreams of a time when peace will reign. Then, the Israel Defense Force will be made joyously redundant, as "one nation will not lift a sword against another nation, and they will no longer learn to wage war".

all the truth is written in the Holy Bible for all to read.whatever nation moves against Israel is doomed, as per the Good Book.Israel is right in maintaining a rigid stance against all who would do her harm.

In America
Have always been proud of my country and their principles....We are not a country at this point in history that bases its laws...on the Bible....and yet the majority of people I think believe our slogan "In G-d we Trust"....and no matter what our religion we agree to a Supreme Being...that somehow blesses us when we do whats right....In Jewdiasm if any part of the Torah is not valid that would disqualify the whole....We are a nation that values Freedom above all else---don't like the idea of giving up our principles...for Freedom..because ultimately we are the world...and as they say can make it a better place. ...Standing with Israel is like standing up for all of us..and our right to live .in our homes......and giving up Gush Katiff...was a mistake and Israel of course has a right to defend itself .... It gets tiresome to talk about it its so clear....Peace for peace...is the only solution....

they shot us in cold blood i heard em say.
they did much worse that i daren't say.
they plot for our land everyday.
they say no apologies but evil hearsay .
they are hell-bent i am afraid to say
they make me wanna just runaway.

all is written in the Holy Bible. Of course, some people refer to it as a fairy story, poor fools. Israel is there for ever and has a strong back. The one downfall is that the nation that is giving support to Israel is now hell bent on legalising same sex marriages, this is also written in the Bible, and it refers to the worship of the sodomites. Now, that puts the USA on the wrong side of the Bible, and Israel need their support, so there is a clear message, Israel must rely on herself and noone else. The USA is doomed if it keeps on going the way it is. The Holy Bible must be heeded, else doom awaits.

To anonymous.
I suppose by being anonymous is indeed sage ,as you have removed both yr identity and religion from any counter attack with the above compelling and erudite statements.I am quite satisfied with what you have presented and it affirms what i have read, thought and believed, too. If only all persons belonging to both sides would accept this as doctrine and act accordingly.Furthermore, there is no more need to explain the Israelis right to defend and not surrender the Gaza & Israel too. Lastly, it's your type of input that heightens these types of debates, affixed to the question which pinpoints answers puts the matter to rest. Yours in peace making, amen.

Israel is facing the same insidious propaganda machine as the innocent people in northern ireland have suffered. both hamas and the ira have the ability to harness the chattering classes onto their side, albeit that the terrorists cause more deaths and suffering to their own side.Israel must stick to what it does best, not and inch and ignore the thugs and liars on the left. You have plenty of friends in Ulster.

It is very clearly stated in the Bible that the holy land is promised to the descendants of Abraham, forever, through the line of Isaac and Jacob. Professor Khaleel Mohammed says that the Quran recognizes Israel as belonging to the Jews, their birthright given to them. Imam Abdul Palazzi strongly agrees that Israel belongs to the Jews, in accordance with what is stated in the Quran. He says "every time Arabs fought against Israel they suffered humiliating defeats. In opposing the will of G-d by making war on Israel, Arabs were in effect making war on G-d Himself." He says that it was destined for Ishmael's descendants to live in Arabia and Isaac's descendants to live in Israel.

The answers lie in the Holy Bible.
If we can understand why G+d obeyed Sara's wishes for Ishmael & (mother ) Hagar to be set aside in the wilderness apart from Abraham & Sara so that they too might procreate (Isaac their son ) at a geriatric age too ,then we might understand how & why Israel should be shared or unshared ?? For is not Abraham the father then of the Jews & Muslims, too ??? THINK !!!! .

A different view of N. Eire. (re Belfast's post)
The occupying force was the British empire which abused and set prohibitive laws to oppress Catholics for centuries. Including- but not limited to- starving Irish off their own land (over 1M dead during the hunger,) to blatant Gerrymandering, horribly inadequate housing and unfair hiring practices.

The facsimile HERE is the oppressive Islamic and Christian (Roman) empires. Christians and Muslims killed and abused Jews for 2000 years.

Had the Republic of Ireland stepped up the troubles might have ended sooner. But they decried their hatred of the IRA and washed their hands of it. N. Catholics became synonymous with terrorists along with an underlying sentiment, "They're just Cat'lic bastards like the rest of us." But in truth no one wanted violence, only justice.

Israel OTOH educates and hires ALL its citizens and allows freedom of ideas, speech, worship and assembly. Sorry that's not like the Prods at all. If you're going to tell it Loyalist, tell it like it is.
