Menorah Lighting at Lady Liberty Will Call for Change Around the World

Jewish community leaders will join international representatives and New York officials for an unprecedented grand menorah lighting at the Statue of Liberty organized by Chabad-Lubavitch.

Rabbi Nachman Holtzberg, father of slain Chabad-Lubavitch emissary Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg – who perished along with his wife Rivka and four other Jews at their Chabad House during last month’s terror attacks in Mumbai, India – will light the menorah at the base of the statue Tuesday night.

Part of the “Unite the Lights” campaign, a nationwide effort to promote acts of kindness and goodwill during Chanukah to answer the Mumbai tragedy, the lighting ceremony will also feature the lighting of the Statue of Liberty’s torch.

“The horrible events in Mumbai have provoked a universal outcry and tremendous goodwill by people of all backgrounds and faiths,” said Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, chairman of the educational and social service arms of Chabad-Lubavitch. “Our mission is to mobilize that collective spirit to create meaningful change at home and around the world.”
